Shopkeepers, residents wait for BMTC buses to ply on CMH road after a gap of two years

The commencement of bus services from November 1 on Chinmaya Mission Hospital (CMH) road, one of the busiest stretch in the city, after a gap of two years has brought relief to shopkeepers and residents of that area, who hope that the road's old glory will be revived.

Explaining how barring the bus services in 2008 due to metro construction had dipped sale in most shops on the road by 75 to 80 per cent, Harpal Singh, owner, Pots & Pans, said, "We have seen enough hardships because of the blocked road. Once the buses are allowed to ply we hope more people will come to this area and shops will see better days."

The BMTC announced that from November 1 nearly 100 buses would be plying on the CMH road, thus benefiting the shopkeepers as well as making the journey from Indiranagar to Trinity Circle easier.
"We hope that the bus service will ensure better income for the shopkeepers," said KS Vishwanath, chief traffic manger operations (BMTC).

"We are happy that we will see our old customers again. Many of them used to stop by before boarding the bus," said Imtiaz Ahmed, president, CMH Road Trader's Union.u00a0

Sharing how residents faced problems once the bus stopped plying on CMH road, Ramkrishnam, a state government employee, said, "We are otherwise troubled by auto drivers, who charge a bomb." However, not everybody shared this view.

Pramila Nesargi, an advocate in the High Court, said, "I am doubtful as the pillars already make the area congested. The footpaths are so narrow that people can barely walk. So I wonder if introducing buses will actually make CMH road what it was once upon a time."
