'Saheb daha rupaye dya, ghari jaycha ahe' (Give me Rs 10, I want to go home) ufffd this is what a drunk constable standing on the chowk opposite the Shivajinagar police station was asking commuters at 11 pm last night, claimed some youths.

The constable was identified as Yashwant R Gaikwad (badge number 721). When this reporter confronted him, he said that he was just asking for a lift. But when asked about his inebriated state, Gaikwad claimed that he was only doing so after his duty was over.

Hemant Kirtiwar (25) and Pradeep Shreegiri (24) were heading towards Chatushringi from Fergusson College Road on a bike when Gaikwad stopped them.

Kirtiwar said, "He was reeking of alcohol, and asked us to give him Rs 10 for booze. We initially thought some checking was going on, but later figured that he was stopping whoever passed by him."

Sensing trouble, Gaikwad starting walking towards the nearby police chowky, and returned to the same spot by taking lift. Yet again, he stopped Rahul Kharat, who is a commando with a security agency and asked for a lift.

Kharat said, "Gaikwad told me that despite being a policeman he had 30 offences registered against him. He also asked me to join the police department."

A source from Shivajinagar police station said, "Gaikwad has been warned twice, but he continues to do the same thing. He was earlier with the Cantonment police station and presently he is at the Shivajinagar headquarters."
