The accused however, escaped. After slipping under the radar for a week, the police arrested the accused when he arrived at Bandra railway station on Saturday night.

The victim stays with her parents in DN Nagar, Andheri (W) and studies in Std III at a local school. While the victim’s father works for a private firm, her mother is a housewife. The family’s other relative also resides in the area. The accused, Venkatesh Bender resides with his family and works as a driver for private cars.

According the police, on June 16, when the girl returned home from school, no one was present at her residence.

The accused entered her house, on the pretext of offering her a chocolate, and then proceeded to rape her. The girl was too shocked and scared to tell her parents.

The next evening, while the girl’s parents were out to meet a relative and the girl was watching television, the accused again entered the house and raped her. This time, another relative who was passing the girl’s house heard her scream from inside. When he entered the house, he saw the accused raping the girl.

The relative rushed to alert the locals, by which time the accused, only wearing his pants managed to escape. A case was registered under sections 376 and 511 of the IPC at D N Nagar police station.

On Saturday, the Crime Branch unit 9 got a tip off that the accused was coming to the city at Bandra railway station. There, under the supervision of senior police inspector Sanjay Satardekar a trap was laid to nab Bender. When the accused reached the spot, he was arrested.

Satardekar said, “The accused was on the run, travelling the south of India by car. We have arrested the accused and handed him to the D N Nagar police, as the case is in their jurisdiction.”

The police brought the accused to court and he has now been remanded to police custody.u00a0
