According to Mumbai police officials, Dr Narendra Dabholkar, who was shot dead by two unidentified assailants on Tuesday on Omkareshwar Bridge, never approached the force for protection and filed no complaints about threats received.

During his long movement against black magic and other superstitious beliefs, his group Maharashtra Andhshradha Nirmoolan Samiti (Maharashtra Blindfaith Eradication Committee) organised several meetings and programmes in the state, which saw fervent opposition from right-wing Hindu organisations right through his career as an activist.
