A survey says the Capital has the largest number of candidates using counterfeit degrees to get jobs

We knew it and said so. Now, a survey has proved us right.u00a0

In August, MiD DAY had reported about the well-oiled duplicate degree machinery in the Capital; after two months, a nationwide survey has confirmed the fact. The study, conducted by a firm that screens job applicants for companies, says Delhi has the largest number of candidates who use fake certificates to land jobs.

The survey says almost 17 per cent of educational discrepancies in the country are reported from Delhi, followed by Mumbai (12.9 per cent), Pune (5.3 per cent) and Kolkata (4.7 per cent).

"The numbers tell the story. The data from the second quarter of the year (April, May and June) say Delhi tops the list. It's an analysis of actual trends.

The capital also leads the way when it comes to documents produced by candidates of fake universities.

Interestingly, the study also found almost half of the fake educational documents are from real universities.

Sadly, it has become an industry," said Ashish Dehade, managing director (West Asia) of First Advantage, the firm behind the survey.

Interestingly, the study says more than half the discrepancies by employees are from the banking, financial services and insurance sector. "One out of every four discrepancies is from the IT industry and one out of every seven came from the BPO sector," the report said.

Seniors in spot

Meanwhile, the survey results have the human resources departments of companies worried. "Often, the fake certificates look so real, it becomes difficult for us to spot the difference. The process of screening for counterfeits is so time-taking we don't bother about junior-level employees. But we are very strict about candidates joining at senior posts. If a person is found using a fake degree, he is immediately asked to leave," said Harsh Vardhan, an HR executive with a private retail company.

Candidates worried

The trend has even job applicants vexed. "Just because some people are using counterfeit certificates, all of us are affected. Even if we have real degrees, companies take a long time to screen and then clear us for joining," said Ashutosh Singh, a MA Final Year student.u00a0
