New Delhi: Congress general secretary Ajay Maken, who was the party's face in the Delhi polls, today resigned from the post, taking moral responsibility for the humiliating defeat at the hustings.

He congratulated AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal for his party's landslide victory and hoped he will fulfill all the dreams and promises made during campaigning for the Assembly polls.

"I take moral responsibility for the party's defeat in Delhi assembly polls," he told reporters as the poll results showed that Congress was unable to even open its account. "

I was the face of the Congress in Delhi elections. Since the party has not fared well, I take moral responsibility and am quitting as Congress general secretary," said Maken, who was the chairman of the Congress Campaign Committee in Delhi.

The former minister in the Union and Delhi governments was contesting from Sadar Bazar constituency. "I congratulate Arvind Kejriwal and his party for massive victory in Delhi. Wish him all the best for the future!," he said in tweet.

Congress had won 8 seats in the last Assembly polls in Delhi held in 2013, which threw a hung verdict.
