25 December,2025 09:59 PM IST | Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (Maharashtra) | mid-day online correspondentAhead of the Maharashtra local body elections, several leaders from the Raj Thackeray-led Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) and Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Nashik district on Thursday, reported the PTI. The development comes as political activity intensifies in the city ahead of the Nashik Municipal Corporation elections. Those who joined the BJP include former MNS MLA Nitin Bhosale and former Shiv Sena (UBT) mayor Vinayak Pande. Also joining the party were Yatin Wagh, who served as the first mayor from the MNS, and Congress leaders Shahu Khaire and Sanjay Chavan, as per the PTI. Just a day earlier, he had taken part in celebrations marking the alliance between the MNS and Shiv Sena (UBT). Patil joined the BJP along with his son and his wife Lata Patil, a former corporator. They were welcomed into the party in the presence of BJP minister Girish Mahajan. BJP confident of strong civic poll performance Speaking at the event, Girish Mahajan said people were joining the BJP because they believed in the party’s ideology. He expressed confidence that the BJP would win more than 100 seats in the 122-member Nashik Municipal Corporation, according to the PTI. Her supporters and party workers gathered at the BJP office and staged protests against the move. Political observers say the situation will be closely watched as parties finalise their strategies for the upcoming polls. (with PTI inputs)
25 December,2025 06:54 PM IST | Nashik | mid-day online correspondentTop Maoist leader Ganesh Uike was among six Maoists killed in separate gunfights with security forces in Odisha’s Kandhamal District, police said on Thursday, terming the operation a major success against Left-wing extremism in the state. Union Home Minister Amit Shah described the development as a “major breakthrough”, while Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi called it a “remarkable success” in the campaign to make India free of Naxalism, news agency PTI reported. Communist Party of India (Maoist) central committee member Uike, who carried a bounty of Rs 1.1 crore, was the chief of the banned outfit in Odisha, said Sanjeeb Panda, an additional director general (ADG) of police heading anti-Naxal operations in the state. According to Panda, two Maoists from Chhattisgarh were killed in an exchange of fire with security forces in the Gumma Forest in the Belghar Police Station area on Wednesday night. Fresh gunfights erupted on Thursday morning in a forest under the Chakapad Police Station area, during which four more Maoists, including Uike, were killed, PTI reported. “Four Maoists were killed in the gunfight. One of them was identified as 69-year-old Ganesh Uike, also known by his aliases Pakka Hanumantu, Rajesh Tiwari, Chamru and Rupa. He was a native of Pullemala village under Chendur mandal in Telangana’s Nalgonda district,” Panda said. The identities of the other three Maoists killed on Thursday, including two women, are yet to be ascertained, he added. In a post on X, Shah said, “In a major operation in Kandhamal, Odisha, six Naxalites, including central committee member Ganesh Uike, have been neutralised so far. With this major breakthrough, Odisha stands at the threshold of becoming completely free from Naxalism. We are resolved to eliminate Naxalism before March 31, 2026.” Majhi, who also holds the home portfolio, congratulated the police personnel for their courage, professionalism and coordination. “Today, Odisha has achieved a remarkable success in the campaign to build a Naxal-free India,” he said, adding that peace, development and public safety remained the government’s top priorities. Addressing a press conference, Director General of Police (DGP) YB Khurania said, “While two Maoists were gunned down on Wednesday, four others, including Ganesh Uike, were neutralised this morning. The killing of a central committee member is a big success for Odisha Police and has broken the backbone of Maoists in the state.” DGP calls it one of Odisha’s biggest anti-Maoist operations in recent years He added that operations were continuing along the Kandhamal–Ganjam inter-district boundary and described the exercise as one of the biggest anti-Maoist operations in Odisha in recent years. There were no reports of casualties on the security forces’ side, stated Khurania. “This is the first time in recent years that a Maoist of central committee rank has been killed by security forces in Odisha,” the DGP said. Based on intelligence inputs, a joint operation involving 23 teams — 20 from the special operations group of Odisha Police, two from the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and one from the Border Security Force (BSF) — was launched in the Chakapad Police Station area of Kandhamal and the adjoining Rambha Forest Range in Ganjam District, he said. “Multiple gunfights took place in different areas on Thursday. Later, four bodies of Maoists — two men and two women — were recovered. Two INSAS rifles and a .303 rifle were also seized,” Khurania added. The two Maoists killed on Wednesday night were identified as CPI (Maoist) area committee member Bari alias Rakesh and dalam member Amrit, both from Chhattisgarh, a senior police officer said. They carried a combined bounty of Rs 23.65 lakh, PTI reported. The gunfights followed the surrender of 22 Maoists before the DGP in neighbouring Malkangiri District on Tuesday. Khurania once again appealed to remaining Maoists to lay down arms and return to the mainstream. “Odisha’s surrender and rehabilitation policy is among the best in the country. Surrendered Maoists are provided benefits including financial assistance, housing, ration cards, support for self-employment and skill training,” he said. (With PTI inputs)

25 December,2025 04:25 PM IST | Aligarh | mid-day online correspondentA petition has been filed in the Supreme Court (SC) challenging the Delhi High Court’s (HC’s) order suspending the jail term of expelled Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Kuldeep Singh Sengar in the 2017 Unnao rape case, news agency PTI reported. The plea, filed by advocates Anjale Patel and Pooja Shilpkar, seeks a stay on HC’s order. They argued that the court passed the order without considering the trial court’s observation that Sengar must remain in jail for the rest of his natural life. “The High Court failed to appreciate the material evidence relied upon by the prosecution which clearly demonstrates the barbarity and brutality of the accused, coupled with his demonstrated muscle power, financial influence and criminal propensity, as evidenced from the fact that even while the victim's father was under judicial custody, the accused orchestrated and executed victim's father murder to silence the family and frustrate the due course of justice,” the plea said, according to PTI. The petitioners added that HC committed a “grave error in law as well as on facts” by granting suspension of sentence to Sengar despite his serious criminal record and proven involvement in heinous offences of rape. On Tuesday, the Delhi HC suspended Sengar’s jail term, noting that he had already served seven years and five months in prison. The suspension will remain in effect during the pendency of his appeal challenging the conviction and sentence in the rape case. Sengar had challenged the December 2019 trial court verdict. However, he will remain in jail as he is also serving a 10-year sentence in connection with the custodial death of the victim’s father and has not been granted bail in that case, PTI reported. Unnao rape case: Bail conditions include Rs 15-lakh bond, restraining order HC directed Sengar, who kidnapped and raped the survivor when she was a minor, to furnish a personal bond of Rs 15 lakh with three sureties of the same amount. It also imposed restrictions, barring him from coming within 5 km of the survivor’s residence in Delhi and from threatening her or her mother. The court warned that any violation of these conditions would result in the cancellation of his bail. The Unnao rape case and other related cases were transferred to Delhi from a trial court in Uttar Pradesh on the apex court’s directions on August 1, 2019. Sengar’s appeal against his conviction in the custodial death case of the survivor’s father is also pending, in which he has sought suspension of sentence, citing the time he has already spent in prison. 25 December,2025 02:28 PM IST | New Delhi | mid-day online correspondentAt least nine persons were killed when a speeding truck crashed against a luxury sleeper bus, which caught fire under the impact, in this district early on Thursday, a senior police official said. The bus with 32 passengers, which was on its way to Gokarna was engulfed in flames under the impact of the collision and most of the deceased were burnt alive inside the vehicle, East Zone Inspector General of Police Ravikanthe Gowda told reporters. The accident happened after the truck jumped a road divider and collided with the oncoming bus, Gowda told reporters. The bus driver and cleaner escaped. The truck driver is among the dead, he added. "Our preliminary investigation hints that a diesel tanker might be involved in the accident," Gowda said. Many passengers escaped by jumping from the bus, Gowda said. "Our initial investigation shows that eight passengers and the truck driver have died. Of the 12 injured, nine have been shifted to Sira and three to Tumakuru. One of the critically burnt patients has been taken to Victoria Hospital in Bengaluru," he added. The rest of the injured are out of danger, the IGP said. Another bus from T Dasrahalli to Dandeli with 42 school children that was behind the fateful bus just escaped the accident. "The driver of the bus carrying schoolchildren hit the bus from behind, turned to the other side and veered off the road. Fortunately, no one sustained even a minor injury," Gowda said. The children have continued their journey in another bus, he said, adding that the school bus driver is an important eyewitness to this accident, whose statement will be recorded. 25 December,2025 01:11 PM IST | Chitradurga (Karnataka) | PTIThe Congress on Thursday claimed that over 90 per cent of the Aravallis will not be protected under the redefinition of the hills and will open them up for mining and other activities. In a post on X, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said there is no connection between Prime Minister Narendra Modi's "global talk and local walk" when it comes to environmental concerns. He also accused the government of launching a determined assault on ecological balance by weakening environmental protection laws and loosening pollution norms. Under the new definition, an "Aravalli Hill" is a landform with an elevation of at least 100 metres above its local surrounding terrain and an "Aravalli Range" is a cluster of two or more such hills within 500 metres of each other. "The Modi Sarkar is now going to protect only those Aravalli hills that are at a height of more than 100 metres. According to the Forest Survey of India's data that is authoritative, only 8.7 per cent of the Aravalli hills exceed 100 metres," Ramesh said. "This means that over 90 per cent of the Aravallis will NOT be protected by the new redefinition and could well get opened up for mining, real estate and other activities that will further damage an already ravaged ecosystem," the former environment minister said. This plain and simple truth cannot be covered up, Ramesh said. "This is yet another example of the Modi Sarkar's determined assault on ecological balance that includes loosening of pollution standards, weakening of environment and forest laws, emasculation of the National Green Tribunal and other institutions of environmental governance," he said. "There is simple (simply) no connection between the PM's global talk and his local walk when it comes to environmental concerns," the Congress leader said. After a row over the redefinition of the Aravallis, the Centre on Wednesday issued directions to states for a complete ban on granting new mining leases within the mountain range. The Ministry of Environment and Forests has also directed the Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education to identify additional areas and zones in the entire Aravallis where mining should be prohibited over and above the areas already prohibited for mining by the Centre.
