Punekaris need not flip through brochures to figure out how to spend this weekend. They can simply catch Parikramaa, a festival of classical dance featuring diverse genres under one roof
If you are curious to watch a performance of Odissi, Kuchipudi, Manipuri and Bharatnatyam, and watch veterans like Swapnasundari and Malavika Sarukkai perform, head to the dance fest ufffd Parikramaa. Started three years ago by the Kalvardhini Charitable Trust, their motto is to carry forward the traditions of Indian classical dance.u00a0 
"Morals and ideas should be preserved but techniques should be allowed to flow," said veteran Bharatnatyam dancer Sucheta Chapelkar, who have been organising the event. "We do not promote mixed dance forms (like Bollywood dance) in the same fest as this reduces the seriousness of the event."
Meanwhile, Arundhati Patwardhan, daughter-disciple of Dr Sucheta Chapelkar and the secretary of Trust shares her concerns over the classical dance scenario. "Presently, every lane has a classical dance institute which is run by teachers who do not understand the core and deeper meaning of dancing. Thus, the standards are dropping for future generations."u00a0
The opening day will feature disciples of Dr Sucheta Chapelkar while the second day will be marked by a morning symposium on contemporary issues in classical dance in which Malavika Sarukki, Swapnasundari, Jayshree Gopalan and Aparna Matange will participate with Dr Sucheta Chapelkar. The evening will be marked by live performances by Malavikka Sarukki, Swapnasundari and Dr Sucheta Chapekar in a programme titled Abhivyakti.
