Retro pop is the new cool. Sunny, summery songs on not-so-happy themes spiked with some soul that recalls vintage sounds. Add bright pop-art videos. Before you know it, the 20-something retro popstar is a rage.
Eliza Doolittle (aka Eliza Sophie Caird) who released her self-titled debut this July, has been touring Europe and is expected to perform at a concert in Mumbai early next year. "Eliza was eager to perform in India. Since she's a new artist with absolutely no hang-ups, we were as keen to bring her down," says Anand Srinivasan, Senior Manager, international music, EMI India.

Doolittle's singles Skinny Genes and Pack Up have been topping UK charts and have already turned into concert hits. She's also been covering a varied mix of tracks at her shows, right from Cee Lo Green's (from Gnarls Barkley) F*uck You to pop sensation Justin Bieber's Baby. Says the 22 year-old singer in an e-mail interview, "Sometimes I cover Aretha Franklin and Carole King too. It's fun to work contemporary songs in your own way." She's also done a dreamy version of Brit alt rock band Radiohead's Creep, that's up on Youtube. " I just love Radiohead and have always loved Creep. I think it's always going to be controversial covering a song from a band that has such hardcore fans because it'll never be as good as the original, but I just love having fun with these things. I don't take it too seriously."

Surprisingly, Doolittle has broken away from a powerful theatre lineage (both her parents are involved in British theatre and her grandmother Sylvia Young founded a theatre school named after her). She reasons, "I can't stand the repetitiveness of eight shows a week. I love to live a different day every day." She's also been signed on by a sportswear major that has been riding on her pop fashionista image. "I love the fact that music and fashion go hand-in-hand and I really like to see what Lady Gaga is going to wear next. My music will always come first but I love to play around with outfits."

But it's not been all pop glory. The singer has been vehemently rebuffing all comparisons to Lily Allen, who's now on a maternity break from her career. The 25 year-old Allen topped charts with her track Smile and was interestingly also signed onto the same label. Allen tweeted last month: "Then again, maybe if she'd (Eliza) gone in a different direction with her artwork and wasn't riding around on a chopper in her new video."u00a0
