Noted ornithologist and environmentalist Prakash Gole died here following a prolonged illness, family sources said today
Gole (75), who passed away last night, was associated with many national and international institutions working in the field of ornithology.
He had set up "Ecological Society" in the city in 1982 in order to create environmental awareness and developed a diploma course in Sustainable Management of Natural Resources for those interested in conservation studies.
Gole had also worked with the renowned ornithologist Salim Ali and spotted a rare bird "Black Necked Crane" in Arunachal Pradesh in 1980s after it was thought to be an extinct species in India.
His research work on Siberian Cranes, Sarus Cranes as well as Wetland conservation was acknowledged at various international forums.
The environmentalist had also contributed to river water management projects in Maharashtra A professor of Economics, Gole pursued his avid interest in ecology and conservation with dedicated work spanning five decades during which he endeavoured to rope in younger generation to promote the cause of preservation of natural environment.
