As the threat of terror looms large and the authorities search for answers, businessmen from Asia's largest market plan to set up a monitoring network of static IP and 16 CCTV cameras

Terror remains a very grave and real threat for the Indian democracy. While the authorities are racking their brains to find viable answers, enterprising citizens are showing the way. The businessmen at Sadar Bazaar's Barri market have set up a wall-to-wall interface to monitor everyday operations in the area.

The market association had applied for an IP address on an MTNL telephone number, which they received yesterday. Now they can link-up the IP address to the connection at their homes and scrutinise the footage from the 16 CCTV cameras that were installed at the market, a year and a half ago.

The system will connect four to five traders of the association, including the President, Vice-President and Secretary. The traders also plan to forward the application to the Sadar police station. Hence all the parties having access to the IP address can scrutinise the market movements, sitting at their homes, offices, and even the police station.

Paramjit Singh Pamma, President of the Sadar Bazar Barri Market Traders Association sounded suitably pleased. "We are trying to make use of technology by getting this static IP. We will get it hooked-up to four to five connections and the police station. We have got the IP address and now will get it connected with the help of an engineer," he said.

"There are so many untoward incidents happening on a daily basis. We want to secure the market from terrorism and also other crimes like robbery etc. If any such incident takes place, we can watch it from our place and take necessary action, instead of coming over. Even police can see it at the police station and take

the requisite steps," he added.

Sushil Aggarwal, Vice-President of the association said, "I was dealing with a trader for business purposes. He has four places to monitor with regard to his work. He got CCTV cameras installed and then an IP to connect it all. He sits at his home and keeps a watch on all the four places.

Hence, we too got an idea of keeping a watch on the whole locality and take necessary action, even if we are not in the market. At the same time, it will be helpful for the police to monitor the security as the market is always overcrowded."

However, it seems the police are yet to hear of the idea. Sagar Preet Hooda, Deputy Commissioner of police, North District told MiD DAY, "I am not aware of this and hence can't comment on it now."
