PK Nair panel report that highlighted paucity of hostel rooms on campus still awaits governing council response
Students enrolling for a course in the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) this year may have a tough time getting hostel accommodation. The PK Nair Committee is still awaiting a response from the governing council (GC) on its interim report.
The committee was formed last year to draw up a detailed report on the revitalisation and upgradation of the institute. The report had highlighted the paucity of hostel rooms on the campus. It had pointed out that there was no rooms for newly admitted students to stay on campus.
Though students have already submitted their forms and admission fees, they have no clue about their accommodation facilities.
"The governing council's attitude towards the problems in the FTII has been callous. It's unable to understand that the backlog issues are a major concern," said PK Nair, chairman of the committee.
An FTII official on condition of anonymity said the current batch was told well in advance that they would have to look for accommodation outside the institute.
"The students were informed before they took admission that they will have to stay in rented flats and will not get rooms in the hostel immediately," he said.
Students from 2005 and 2006 batches are still staying on campus because of their projects.
Naveen Padmanabha, a third-year student of direction, said he had to share a two-bed room with four students initially. "It was very congested but we had to manage. Last year also, students of direction, camera, edit and sound got hostel facilities.
Others studying acting and television had to stay outside," said Padmanabha. The new hostel that is being built opposite the main campus is still in the primary stages of construction.Students have been assured that the building will be ready by July. Manoj Kumar, a second-year student of direction, said: "We have been assured that the hostel will be ready soon, which does not seem likely. Once the juniors come in July, we will have to adjust even further."
