Four student films from the Film and Television Institute of India won for Best Editing, Best Director (Animation), Best Sound Design (Fiction) and one received a Special Mention
“I always wanted to work with a different concept of how people behave differently in the same situation,” said Samar Ali Warsi who won for Best Editing (non-fiction) along with Karan Singh for the film Things Missing (12.2 min) at the NFSA this year. He said, “I loved the film editing part the most; we used progressive techniques in it. It was a self-learning experience for my team and me and our hard work has finally paid off.”

The short revolves around three directors who think differently and was made using the non-classical style of editing. The cinematography and sound was developed as the film progressed. “The fact that I had to face the camera was the most difficult task for me,” said Warsi. He advised the other directors to follow their heart and believe in themselves to succeed. “Apply your own style at work and you will win for sure,” Warsi added.

Jithindas CH won for Best Director (Animati-on) for Black 'o' Whyte
Warsi was one of the four student films from the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune won awards at the second edition of the National Students Film Awards held at Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute, Kolkata from February 27-March 2.

Another student Jithindas CH made FTII proud by receiving the Best Director for animation award for the film Black 'o' Whyte. He said, “Making an animation movie was not an easy task as we had to learn the software a whole lot of new things.

We referred to lessons available on the Internet to achieve this. Winning the award makes all the hardship worthwhile.” In his advice to other budding artists, he said, “While making movies, one must have the knowledge of film-making as well as content of the film to be made, then only the movie will be better and well received”.
The award for best sound design (fiction) went to Prantik Narayan Basu for the film Makara. Narayan shared, “ We did everything in our capacity to achieve the sound design such as capturing natural sounds. We also emphasised on the sound effects, the parts with lengthy dialogues were more challenging as they required more background music.” On getting the award he said, “It was a nice feel to get the award and the whole team was delighted about it.”
A special mention was given to the film Mandrake! Mandrake! (25 min) directed by Ruchir Arun
