With the advent of monsoon, PMC and city doctors warn outbreak of several waterborne diseases

A few weeks after the first cases of swine flu were detected, the monsoons have arrived in Pune.u00a0

City doctors are sounding out their annual health alerts, warning citizens to guard themselves against various illnesses that spread this season.

Mosquito scare
Dr Dhananjay Chandakkar, medical officer, health, PMC told MiD DAY, "Gastro, malaria, dengue, cholera, vomiting diarrhoea, hepatitis and typhoid are diseases commonly associated with the rainy season." The first cases of gastro this season are being treated at the PMC's Dr Naidu hospital. He added, "Malaria and dengue can be avoided if one doesn't store water for more than four days, as both diseases are spread by mosquitoes, which tend to breed on stagnant water."

Dr Chandakkar said on experiencing symptoms like shivering and fever, one should contact a doctor immediately. "One should be especially prompt if one has been in physical contact with someone who has travelled abroad recently."

Dr P S Pawar, the superintendent of Sassoon hospital told MiD DAY that it was too early to predict with any certainty how serious the spread of these diseases would be. "We will be in a better position to give figures once we are further into the monsoons," Pawar said.

Dr Avinash Bhondve, president, Indian Medical Association (IMA), said the rains also affects asthma patients and those with chronic bronchitis.

"During the rains arthritic patients may experience severe joint pains. Wearing damp clothes may lead to skin rashes and fungal infections," said Dr Bhondve. He added that flies breed in wet garbage, which leads to the spread of typhoid and jaundice.
