Nine others were injured in the fire that broke out at IndusInd Bank, IBL House, MIDC late on Thursday night
Rohan Tatkare, one of those killed in the IBL House fire, lived in Gurukripa Chawl at Jogeshwari (East), and is survived by his mother Rashmi and elder sister Roshni. After losing the victim’s father to a heart attack three years ago, Rohan’s death came as a dreadful shock to the family. “He had listed a cousin’s number as an emergency contact and we got a call from him around 1 am,” said Roshni, adding that Rohan was pursuing a PG diploma course in retail management.

“He used to return home very late at night around 1.30 am 2 am. His mother waited for him daily, to serve him dinner. She is completely stunned because of the tragedy,” said a neighbour. Rohan was one of the four IndusInd Bank employees who died in the blaze that broke out on the first floor of the seven-storey building in MIDC around 11.20 pm on Thursday. Eight fire tenders and two water tankers were pressed into service, which managed to douse the flames by 1.30 am. All the floors in the building were occupied by the bank.
“The main cause of the fire was the defective electrical setup. The firefighting system in the building was not in working condition. They had also not sent fire safety compliance reports to us regularly. Lastly, the ventilation points till the sixth floor were blocked due to glass facades, and on the seventh floor it was cut off by a brick wall,” said Harish R Shetty, assistant divisional fire officer, Marol Naka fire station. He added that owing to lack of ventilation the smoke kept circulating inside causing suffocation, and that an FIR would be lodged against the bank for not following fire safety rules.
The deceased, who were working the night shift in the back office section of the bank, were identified as Atanu Mohanchand Shah from Bhandup, Rakesh Balu Shirkar from Jogeshwari, Rohan Ramakant Tatkare from Jogeshwari and Sudeep Sunil Naik from Powai. Of the nine injured, one Vaibhav Vittal Patil was taken to Holy Spirit Hospital. Those admitted to Seven Hills Hospital were identified as Nikhil Gupta, Vinod, Pandey, Jayendra Ghadge, Mujahid Sheikh, Samadhan Chorgade, Jacob Madad and Rajan Perumal.
