An acute dearth of space and sordid accumulation of garbageu00a0-- see how two other cities are battling the problems facing our own Mumbai

Being citizens of Mumbai, we are aware of what it is like to live in a space that is an explosion of transformation. The landscape of our city is constantly changing.

In Shanghai too, every half hour a new skyscraper is built, and every year the city's population grows by half a million people. Nanna Frank Moller's 58-minute documentary, Shanghai Space, captures on camera an attempt by the authorities who are desperately seeking out more space.

In an office on the 20th floor, government advisor Professor Shu prepares the next generation of young urban planners for Shanghai's future. In order to find the space needed for Shanghai's millions of inhabitants, planners are now looking underground.

Watch Shanghai Space, a gripping and pertinent film about tomorrow's urban spaces and the 21st century's megacities, as part of the Cities on Speed film series that is showcasing two documentaries at the Max Mueller Bhavan today.

From Shanghai, zoom to Cairo that is described as the 'the mother of all garbage cities'. In the documentary Cairo Garbage by Mikala Krogh, the streets are drowned in waste and entire social groupings survive solely through collecting, sorting and selling the left-overs of other people.

The garbage people, as they are called, live a parallel life in the foul-smelling neighborhoods of Cairo, while the city's authorities are feverishly trying to convince their citizens about the advantages of modern renovation.

And while authorities discuss, companies dream and people's associations moralise, the garbage people celebrate a wedding in the church of trash, surrounded by exactly the garbage that the entire city is trying to get rid of. A grimy story that is hard to wash off.
