A group of artists who will soon display their works tried to find reason for it. Their exhibition is a must attend
WE may doubt Bapu's political aptitude but his approach to humanity is, beyond doubt, better than any other humanitarian in world history. Perhaps that's the reason why people who're looked upon as role models or idols like Obama find guidance in the ideologies of this silent freedom fighter. 
The irony, or you can call it a bitter reality, if you're a Gandhian and you're an Indian, it isn't easy for you to put your point across to people who're just not ready to judge Gandhi's decisiveness beyond Partition.
However, a troupe of 22 renowned artists like Atul Dodiya, Gigi Scaria, Manjunath Kamath, V Viswanadhan and Murali Cherooth travelled from Sabarmati to Dandi to find out if people really care what the epitome of non-violence wanted us to follow.

If you ask your son or brother to abide by the laws, he'll try his best to do what you've asked him to refrain from. That's human. But this exhibition isn't preachy, yet the works allow you to shift from one emotion to another. While there's dark humour in Sukesan Kanka Salvation works, Sudhir Patwardhan's work on handmade paper, Walk, is for people who believe in thinkers' attitude. "We never wanted to impose a particular belief on the patrons so we asked the participating artists to just make what they feel. That's the reason why the series doesn't look biased," says Anubhav R Nath, co-curator of this exhibition who too was a part of the troupe that travelled to trace existing perceptions about Gandhi in the villages that fall on the same track as that of Dandi March.u00a0u00a0

A trip to remember
When you're tracing someone else's footsteps, you're bound to return with memories, reactions and beliefs that fail to fade. Adds Anubhav, "There were so many moments in the trip that I'll remember even on my death bed.

We met kids in and around Ahmedabad who asked us, 'Who's Gandhi?'. It's shocking but it's true. Probably the 'on the edge' life that we're now used to is making it difficult for people to practise what Gandhiji told us. We also met a man who said that his goat belongs to the same family of goat, whose milk was used to by Gandhiji. All of us just couldn't stop laughing. The centre which was supposed to preserve Gandhi's ideologies through art and cultural works too has lost
its purpose."

Up for sale
The line of paintings, photos and installations are up for sale. The price tag that starts at Rs 7,000 will have no upper limit. "I'm sure there's a market out there for the exhibited works.
Several art collectors, agents and galleries who have got a chance to see our works have given us positive feedback. But I don't want to be too happy about it until the show opens," signs off the curator who last year had co-curated Expressions of Tihar, an experiential exhibition by inmates of the Tihar Jail.
