BJP leader AH Basavaraj threw a party on Sunday so candidates would support him for mayor's post only to lose elections himself

AH Basavaraj, the former BJP leader in the city council, paid yesterday for counting his chickens before they hatched.

No wonder, he preferred to avoid the limelight yesterday, despite the unprecedented victory notched by his party in the civic polls.

Big Dinner

Basavaraj, who was eyeing the mayor's seat, had hosted a grand dinner party on Sunday to woo 55 popular BJP candidates, who were expected to win.

The party ended on a sour note for Basavaraj andu00a0 embarrassment for his guests because while the party won, the host lost from the Ganesh Mandir ward.

"He was so confident that he had madeu00a0 preparations for his swearing -in ceremony a day before the results were announced. It's unfortunate he lost."

But his defeat was not the only cause of his despair. His confidence, aspirations and much in advance preparations eyeing the mayor's seat added to his woes.

"He had organised this party to woo would be corporators," said Bhaskar, a friend of one of the attendees. "He did this to ensure the winning candidates' support him for the mayor's post."

Party leaders, who worked hard to accommodate Basavaraj's wish to reserve the mayor's seat for (BC-A) category, also happens to be the category Basavaraj belongs to.

All in vain

But, all their efforts were in vain, after Basavaraj lost to Congress's L Govindraj.

Though the reservation foru00a0 mayor post was changed to general category, Basavaraj, who made all preparations unaware of this, ended up losing.

"It was unfortunate," said Basavaraj. "My friends in the party, who have won are disturbed too. I hope my party nominates me to the council. This will help me serve the city better."
