While the Deonar dumping ground inches towards closure at a sluggish pace, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's efforts with the Gorai Scientific Landfill Closure Project have drawn praise from foreign shores
The International Finance Corporation has nominated Gorai Scientific Landfill Closure Project as one of the top 10 PPP (Public Private Partnership) projects in East Asia, the Pacific and South Asia. They have rated this project as one of the most successful, where results were delivered on time.
The civic body had shut the Gorai dumping ground in 2007 as residents had major grievances. The landfill was completed by 2010, bringing relief to residents who had suffered owing to the 1,200 tonnes of garbage that was dumped there every day for over 25 years. The entire stretch has now been converted into a green area.

The PPP was in collaboration with United Phosphorous Limited. It has been nominated as a model PPP project that can be implemented elsewhere. Deputy Chief Engineer S Chitale said, “This is a prestigious project to us as well and the award is a matter of honour. Our current focus is the Deonar ground and we are working hard on that project too.” Borivli resident Sunita Hegde said, “The BMC has done a commendable job.”u00a0
