In a first for the city, around 300 women govindas will form a towering human pyramid to dwarf male dominance as far as breaking dahi handis is concerned. Special preparations for the women's Dahi Handi festival, scheduled on August 22, have been made at Jeet Ground off Paud Road in Kothrud.



The organisers have roped in female govindas from Mumbai and Thane to do the job this year, but they plan to train city girls for the event next year. "Besides breaking male hegemony over handhiu00a0 festival, it will also help
create awareness about pressing social issues such as female infanticide and gender bias," said Deepa Sanas, one of the organisers of the event.

Kishor Shinde, PMC local corproator form Maharashtra Navnirman Sena, who is also the brain behind the all-women festival. "We invite all women in the area to participate in the fest. The winners will be given handsome rewards," he said. According to the organisers, an orchestra and a drummers' group will be there is set up the mood.

Like her grandpa
Baburao Sanas, grandfather ofu00a0 Deepa, was the first mayor of Pune Municipal Corporation. He had started Ganpati Utsav and Dahi Handi festival in the city.
