BJP clinches Chandrapur mayoral post by one vote with Shiv Sena (UBT) support

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Corporator Sangeeta Khandekar was elected as the mayor of Chandrapur by a narrow margin of one vote on Tuesday, with crucial support from the Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray), in a closely contested civic election. The backing of the Shiv Sena (UBT) group proved decisive for BJP in a House with finely balanced numbers. The mayoral poll saw hectic political negotiations and last-minute realignments, with every single vote proving critical. In contrast, the election for the deputy mayor’s post ended in a tie. Shiv Sena (UBT) candidate Prashant Danav was declared elected after a draw of lots, as both the Congress and Shiv Sena (UBT) candidates secured 32 votes each, making it impossible to determine a winner through voting. According to the party-wise strength in the civic body, the BJP has 23 corporators, Shiv Sena (UBT) has six members, along with two Independents, and one Shiv Sena (Shinde) member. A total of 35 votes were required to secure a majority. All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) remained neutral during the election process. Congress cries foul as alliances and internal rifts shape Chandrapur result Political observers noted that internal factionalism within the Congress, coupled with UBT’s strategic support to the BJP in the mayoral election, tilted the outcome in favour of the BJP in Chandrapur’s civic politics. According to sources, Khandekar edged out her nearest rival by a single vote to clinch the mayor’s post with UBT’s backing. Meanwhile, the Congress alleged horse-trading and criticised the role of Shiv Sena (UBT), AIMIM, and the Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA) in the election. “In the Chandrapur mayoral election, the BJP secured 32 votes and Congress 31. The Sena (UBT) is an ally in the MVA and the INDIA bloc. With its six corporators, the Sena (UBT) was expected to support the Congress. But the party chose to go with the BJP. This development will have consequences in the state,” a Congress leader told reporters. Reacting to the election of the BJP Mayor, state Congress chief Harshwardhan Sapkal said the BJP gained the upper hand due to support from AIMIM, while the Prakash Ambedkar-led Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi remained absent during the voting. The outcome surprised political circles in Maharashtra, as the Congress was initially seen as better placed to install its mayor following the fractured verdict in the January 15 civic polls. Till Monday, there was no clarity on alliances in the Chandrapur civic body. (With ANI and PTI inputs)

Shiv Sena MP Milind Deora hits back at Oppn over 'dead economy' claim

Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena MP Milind Murli Deora on Tuesday criticised remarks calling India’s economy “dead,” which echoed statements made by US President Donald Trump and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, reported the PTI. Deora said during a discussion on the Union Budget 2026-27 that the only thing “dead” is the lack of confidence some people have in India, while their hatred for the country remains alive. Deora pointed to India’s recent trade deal with the European Union, saying, “If India’s economy was dead, why did the Europeans sign the biggest trade deal with India and not with China or the United States?"   He further highlighted the fact that this deal proves that countries around the world are eager to trade with us and on our own terms, and that such agreements would not happen if the economy were truly “dead.” Economic growth and digital achievements Highlighting India’s economic progress, he said, “We are the fastest-growing major economy in the world. UPI is processing over 70 crore transactions every day, making India a global leader in real-time digital payments,” as per PTI.  He also cited financial inclusion programs like the Jan Dhan Yojna, which brought 50 crore Indians into the formal banking system and transferred Rs 41 lakh crore directly to citizens, saving taxpayers Rs 3.5 lakh crore by preventing leakages. Rising revenues and private investment Deora noted the doubling of GST collections, from Rs 11 lakh crore in 2020 to Rs 22 lakh crore in 2025. He also countered criticism of private sector investment: “Private sector investments have peaked at Rs 6.5 lakh crore in 2024, which is 66 per cent more than in 2021,” as per PTI. Deora criticized previous governments for neglecting manufacturing and entrepreneurship. He praised current initiatives like the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, which has spent Rs 24,000 crore and created 12.5 lakh jobs, helping revive the manufacturing sector. Further he emphasized India’s resilience in a volatile global economy: “The budget comes at a time of political and economic instability worldwide. India stands alone as a rare island of macro-economic growth and stability,” as per PTI. BJP MP Surendra Singh Nagar also praised the budget, saying that increased spending on infrastructure would help propel India toward its development goals. Opposition criticism Opposition leaders continued to voice concerns. Kanimozhi (DMK) called the budget a “failed budget” that favors corporates over workers, farmers, and the middle class. Neeraj Dangi (Congress) said the stock market crash on budget day reflected investor losses and unmet expectations. Sukhendu Sekhar Ray (TMC) criticized the government for not addressing unemployment and pointed out challenges in the jute industry. (With PTI Inputs)

ED issues fresh summons to Anil and Tina Ambani in money laundering case

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has issued new summons to Reliance Group chairman Anil Ambani and his wife, former actor Tina Ambani, directing them to appear for questioning in a money laundering case next week, officials said on Tuesday. Tina Ambani, 68, had been scheduled to depose on Monday but failed to appear. She is now expected to appear on February 17, with Anil Ambani, 66, set to follow on February 18. Their statements will be recorded under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), officials said, reported news agency PTI.  A response from the Reliance Group regarding these summons is awaited. Anil Ambani was questioned by the ED last year as part of investigations linked to multiple Reliance Group companies and their bank loans. Tina Ambani has been called for questioning concerning a money trail linked to the purchase of a luxury condominium in Manhattan, New York. According to PTI, the ED had recently arrested former RCOM (Reliance Communication) president Punit Garg in connection with this case. The New York property was reportedly “fraudulently” sold in 2023 during the corporate insolvency resolution process (CIRP) of RCOM by Garg, the ED stated earlier. RCOM informed the stock exchange about this “fraudulent” sale in 2025. “The sale proceeds of USD 8.3 million (approximately Rs 69.55 crore in 2023) were remitted from the USA under the guise of a sham investment arrangement with a Dubai-based entity controlled by a Pakistan-linked individual, without the knowledge or consent of the Resolution Professional (RP),” the agency claimed, reported PTI.  The ED recently constituted a special investigation team (SIT) to probe multiple cases of alleged bank fraud and related financial irregularities against the Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group (ADAG), following directions from the Supreme Court. The agency has attached assets worth Rs 12,000 crore as part of this probe and has filed three complaints, called Enforcement Case Information Reports (ECIRs), against Reliance Group companies. ED attaches assets valued at Rs 1,885 crore of Anil Ambani Group Earlier in January, the ED provisionally attached assets worth Rs 1,885 crore belonging to Anil Ambani's Reliance Group, including immovable properties, bank balances, receivables, and shareholding in unquoted investments, according to an agency statement. The attachments pertain to cases involving Reliance Home Finance Ltd (RFHL), Reliance Commercial Finance Ltd (RCFL), the Yes Bank fraud case, and the Reliance Communication Ltd (RCOM) bank fraud case, the statement added. The attached assets include Reliance Infrastructure Ltd’s shareholding in BSES Yamuna Power Ltd, BSES Rajdhani Power Ltd, and Mumbai Metro One Private Ltd. Additionally, a bank balance of Rs 148 crore and receivables worth Rs 143 crore have been provisionally attached in the hands of M/s Value Corp Finance and Securities Ltd. A residential house in the name of Angarai Sethuraman, and shares/mutual funds in the name of Puneet Garg, both senior employees of the Reliance Group, have also been provisionally attached, the statement said. Opposition accuses speaker Om Birla of bias, submits no confidence notice

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Tuesday directed the House Secretary-General to examine the no-confidence motion notice against him and take appropriate action, according to sources. The Congress today submitted a notice of no-confidence motion against Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi said, "At 1:14 pm today, we submitted a motion for a no-confidence motion against the Speaker under rule 94C rules and procedures." A total of 118 MPs have signed the notice of no-confidence motion against the Lok Sabha Speaker, according to Congress sources. Sources said Opposition MPs alleged "blatantly partisan" conduct and that leaders of Opposition parties were not allowed to speak. Sources said the notice of motion of no-confidence cited four incidents against the Speaker, including the Opposition's allegation that Lok Sabha LoP Rahul Gandhi was not allowed to speak in the House during the discussion on the motion of Thanks to the President's Address. Gandhi cited General MM Naravane's unpublished memoir to discuss the 2020 standoff against China. Sources added that the Opposition MPs also flagged the suspension of eight MPs, BJP MP Nishikant Dubey's "objectionable and personalised attacks" against former Prime Ministers and Speaker Om Birla's statement, where he said he had urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi not to come to the House to prevent any unpleasant incident, after receiving information that some Congress MPs could come to the PM's seat and "resort to an unprecedented incident". Congress MP Manickam Tagore took to social media platform X to state that the Opposition has taken such a step in "extraordinary circumstances." Tagore wrote, "The Opposition has placed its faith in constitutional propriety. While holding the Hon'ble Speaker in personal regard, we are pained and anguished by the consistent denial of opportunities to Opposition MPs to raise issues of public importance. After many years, a no-confidence notice against the Speaker has been moved--an extraordinary step born out of extraordinary circumstances." Meanwhile, the Trinamool Congress asked the Congress to submit an appeal to Speaker Om Birla before moving a no-confidence motion against him, Abhishek Banerjee said today. TMC said that the party will sign on the no-confidence motion if the Speaker does not act on the Opposition's appeal within two to three days. Abhishek Banerjee told reporters, "Even yesterday we made it clear that all the TMC MPs will sign the no-confidence motion resolution, but our suggestion to them was that the issues, including suspension of MPs, LoP not being allowed to speak, women MPs being falsely accused and that the Chair is working in a biased manner. We said that firstly, we should write a letter in the form of a protest to the Speaker and the signatures of all opposition MPs should be there, and we should give the Speaker two-to-three days' time. If the Speaker does not take any action on it, then we always have the room to move a no-confidence motion; we have no problem." Fresh snowfall blankets Kashmir's higher reaches; rain likely in plains

Higher reaches of Kashmir received fresh snowfall on Tuesday as night temperatures rose due to overcast conditions in the valley, officials said. Hundreds of tourists in Gulmarg resort in the Baramulla district of north Kashmir were pleasantly surprised as they woke up to snowfall in the early hours. Overcast conditions prevailed in the rest of the valley as the meteorological department has forecast light to moderate rains over the next 24 hours. The cloudy skies, however, pushed the night temperature higher as Srinagar recorded a minimum temperature of 3.3 degrees Celsius on Monday night, 3.1 degrees higher than the seasonal average, the officials said. They said Gulmarg, the popular ski resort, was the coldest in Kashmir with a minimum temperature of minus 3.4 degrees Celsius. The mercury in Pahalgam, a tourist resort in south Kashmir, which serves as a base camp for the Amarnath yatra, settled at minus 0.4 degrees Celsius, the officials added. Among other places, Qazigund's minimum temperature settled at 2.6 degrees, Kokernag recorded a low of minus 1.3 degrees Celsius, and Kupwara's minimum temperature settled at zero degrees Celsius, the Met said.  This story has been sourced from a third party syndicated feed, agencies. Hyderabad: Software professional held for serial night-time burglaries

A Hyderabad-based software professional was arrested for his alleged involvement in 26 night-time burglaries from houses, a police official said on Tuesday. The accused, identified as Acchi Mahesh Reddy alias Sunny from Kakinada, allegedly carried out a series of offences after the Sankranti festival and had committed similar crimes last year as well, police said. "We (Vizag police) have arrested a Hyderabad-based software professional on February 7 for his involvement in 26 night-time house burglaries and recovered gold, silver, and other stolen property worth over Rs 15 lakh," Vizag Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crimes) K Lata Madhuri told PTI. Acting on technical evidence and CCTV analysis, police arrested the accused near Arch Road in Gajuwaka and recovered 699 grams of gold, 3.8 kg of silver, a BMW car purchased with stolen money, and house-breaking tools. The accused smartly ensured that he did not leave fingerprints or any other evidence at the crime scene, Madhuri said. The DCP said the offender targeted houses during night hours and is suspected to have conducted recce during the daytime, though he has not admitted to it so far. Police also found that the two-wheeler used for the offences belonged to a person named Mahesh, who was unaware that his vehicle was being used for robberies. The case came to light after a resident of Gajuwaka lodged a complaint on October 14, 2025, stating that his house was burgled while he was away with his family. Based on the complaint, Gajuwaka police registered a case under sections 331(4) and 305(a) of the BNS and launched an investigation. Madhuri said similar thefts were reported in Gajuwaka, Arilova, Malkapuram, Pendurthi, and Duvvada areas, linking the accused to 26 cases within Visakhapatnam city. In these cases, over 1,080 grams of gold, nearly 6,333 grams of silver, and cash worth Rs 40,500 were stolen, with the cumulative value estimated at about Rs 25 lakh. The DCP said the accused had a long criminal history and first went to a juvenile jail at the age of 15 in Kakinada, where a Dossier Criminal (DC) sheet was opened against him. "We will open a rowdy sheet against him here as a DC sheet already exists in Kakinada. For now, he has been placed under preventive detention for one year," the DCP said. Police also suspect that the accused's mother may have a criminal background, which is yet to be ascertained, she said. This story has been sourced from a third party syndicated feed, agencies.
