19 February,2026 02:06 PM IST | Mumbai | Archana DahiwalUnion Rural Development Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Wednesday directed officials to work on a “war footing” to achieve a revised target of creating six crore ‘Lakhpati Didis’ under the rural livelihoods mission. He also instructed them to prepare a time-bound plan to link 10 crore women with financial inclusion initiatives. Chouhan expressed satisfaction over the mission’s progress but stressed that a focused strategy is required to meet the expanded goals. “Achieving the ambitious goal of 6 crore ‘Lakhpati Didis’ would require connecting at least 10 crore women to the various financial inclusion initiatives of the Ministry of Rural Development,” the minister said, directing officials to work in close coordination with state governments to ensure the successful attainment of these target. 19 February,2026 02:00 PM IST | New Delhi | AgenciesReliance Industries Limited and its digital arm, Jio, will invest 10 lakh crores over the next seven years to spearhead India's artificial intelligence transformation, announced Mukesh Dhirubhai Ambani, Chairman and Managing Director of Reliance, while addressing the India AI Impact Summit 2026 in New Delhi on Thursday. Mukesh Ambani, while addressing the gathering at the AI Summit, said, "Jio, together with Reliance, will invest Rs 10 lakh crore over the next seven years starting this year. This is not a speculative investment. It is not for chasing valuation. This is a patient, disciplined, nation-building capital designed to create durable economic value and strategic resilience for decades to come," as cited by ANI. Mukesh Ambani announces a three-part strategy from internet to intelligence He added, "Announcement one: Jio connected India to the internet era. Jio will now connect India to the intelligence era. We will deliver intelligence to every citizen, every sector of the economy, every facet of social development, and every service of government." "Announcement two: Jio, together with Reliance, will invest Rs 10 lakh crore over the next seven years starting this year. Third announcement: Jio Intelligence will build India's sovereign computer infrastructure through three bold initiatives – one, gigawatt-scale data centers. We already started construction on multi-gigawatt AI-ready data centers at Jamnagar. Over 120 megawatts will come online in the second half of 2026 this year; two, our green energy advantage. We have an in-house energy advantage with up to 10 gigawatts of ready green power surplus anchored by solar in both Kutch and Andhra Pradesh. Three, a nationwide edge compute layer deeply integrated with Jio's network will make intelligence responsive, low latency, and affordable, close to where Indians live, learn, and work," Ambani highlighted the second point. Mukesh also noted that the primary goal is to make intelligence "as ubiquitous as connectivity. Jio Intelligence is guided by five non-negotiable principles. He further said, "India cannot afford to rent intelligence. Therefore, we will reduce the cost of intelligence as dramatically as we did the cost of data," as per ANI. The chairman of Reliance Industries further highlighted that these systems are guided by the principle of "AI for India's deep tech and advanced manufacturing leadership", aiming to reach agriculture and the informal sector rather than just large enterprises. ‘India is the world's largest mobile data consumer,' says Mukesh Ambani. Reflecting on India's digital progress over the past decade, Ambani cited the nation's position as the world's largest mobile data consumer with nearly 1 billion internet users. Ambani further mentioned that India's digital public infrastructure, including Aadhaar and UPI, now serves as a global template. "India will emerge as one of the greatest AI powers in the world in the 21st century," Ambani stated, citing the country's strengths in demography, democracy, and data generation. Mukesh Ambani introduces ‘JIO AI Bharat' Mukesh Ambani has also introduced "Jio AI Bharat", a multilingual AI capability across all Indian languages. Ambani described this as a tool for inclusion, allowing farmers, artisans, and students to interact with technology in their mother tongues. He emphasised that Jio "will ensure that AI won't take jobs but will create jobs, and AI will create high-skilled work opportunities." "Ambani assured that the company "will partner with the best tech companies of the world," as per ANI. (With inputs from ANI)

19 February,2026 01:52 PM IST | New Delhi | mid-day online correspondentIndian homebuyers are increasingly opting for larger living spaces, with average flat sizes across the top seven cities rising by 17 per cent in just two years, according to the latest research by ANAROCK Property Consultants. The data shows that the average apartment size in these key urban centres increased from 1,420 square feet (ft) in 2023 to approximately 1,676 sq ft in 2025. The momentum continued over the past year, with an 8 per cent rise from around 1,540 sq ft in 2024. Anuj Puri, the chairman of ANAROCK Group, attributed the shift to evolving buyer preferences in the post-Covid period. “Large 3-4BHK homes and units with additional study rooms have now become mainstream in many of the top seven cities. Highly motivated buyers of such homes remain unfazed by higher price tags,” he said, adding, “Luxury housing is firmly in the driver’s seat.” Puri noted that the sustained demand for bigger homes counters speculation of a cooling residential market. “Despite relentless price growth in high-demand corridors, our latest data shows that the average size of homes across the top seven cities together saw a steep 17 per cent jump in the last two years,” he said. He added that luxury residential real estate has increasingly become a symbol of lifestyle aspiration and upward social mobility, with the pandemic permanently reshaping buyer expectations around layout, space and upgraded living standards. City-wise trends (2023–2025) The National Capital Region (NCR) recorded the highest growth in average flat sizes at 30 per cent, rising from 1,890 sq ft in 2023 to approximately 2,466 sq ft in 2025. The increase was driven by a sharp rise in new luxury supply — homes priced above Rs 1.5 crore — with the luxury segment’s share in launches increasing from 40 per cent in 2023 to 80 per cent in 2025. Hyderabad retained the distinction of having the largest average flat size in 2025 at 2,600 sq ft, up 13 per cent from 2,299 sq ft in 2023, followed by NCR. Other key markets also reported notable increases: Bengaluru: Up by 21 per cent, from 1,484 sq ft to 1,790 sq ft Chennai: Up by 24 per cent, from 1,260 sq ft to 1,561 sq ft. In contrast, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) continued to record the smallest average home sizes, though it saw a 12 per cent increase from 810 sq ft in 2023 to 904 sq ft in 2025 — the lowest among the top seven cities. Pune and Kolkata posted relatively modest growth of 5 per cent (to 1,119 sq ft) and 2 per cent (to 1,151 sq ft), respectively. Pune was the only city to record a marginal 1 per cent decline in average sizes over the past year. Longer-term trend Over the six-year post-pandemic period (2019–2025), average flat sizes across the top seven cities rose by 45 per cent, from 1,140 sq ft to approximately 1,656 sq ft. NCR recorded the sharpest long-term growth at 97 per cent, nearly doubling in size, while Hyderabad saw a 53 per cent increase. The findings underline a clear preference for premium, spacious homes with enhanced amenities, even amid rising property prices, as developers respond to growing aspirational demand in India’s major metropolitan markets.
19 February,2026 01:42 PM IST | Mumbai | mid-day online correspondentThe India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast light to moderate rainfall across parts of southern and coastal Tamil Nadu over the next few days, following the formation of a low-pressure area over the equatorial Indian Ocean and adjoining southwest Bay of Bengal. Under its influence, light rainfall is likely in southern Tamil Nadu and along the coastal districts on Friday. Similar conditions are expected to prevail in Puducherry and Karaikal as well. The IMD has also indicated the possibility of moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms at isolated places across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal on Friday and Sunday. In northern Tamil Nadu districts, early morning mist is likely to occur at one or two places over the next two days, potentially affecting visibility during the early hours. As far as Chennai is concerned, the sky is expected to remain partly cloudy. Light mist may form in isolated areas during the early morning hours, the forecast said. 19 February,2026 11:17 AM IST | Unnao | mid-day online correspondentFour passengers, three of them brothers, died after their car fell into a canal here, a senior police official said on Thursday. According to police, the car was travelling from Mahmoodpur to Deeg when the accident occurred near the Nahla Deviya bridge late on Wednesday night. "There is a sharp turn on the road. The vehicle overturned and plunged into a nearly six-metre-wide canal, he said, adding that it overturned again after falling into the water. Two local residents rushed to the spot and managed to pull the car out of the canal but the occupants could not be saved. They subsequently informed the police, Rawat said. 19 February,2026 10:57 AM IST | Mathura | PTIHimachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu criticised opposition BJP MLAs on Wednesday after they refused to support a government resolution seeking the restoration of the Revenue Deficit Grant (RDG). He also said that the resolution, passed in the state assembly amid heavy sloganeering, follows a recommendation by the 16th Finance Commission to discontinue the grant. Speaking to the media, Sukhu said, "It is very unfortunate that BJP MLAs from Himachal Pradesh did not support a resolution seeking restoration of the Revenue Deficit Grant, which was given as a right under the Constitution by the Government of India. We wanted to fight for Himachal's rights collectively. I had even requested that we go together to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi, keeping aside protocol, in the interest of the state. But today, when we raised this issue under Rule 102 after the 16th Finance Commission recommended discontinuation of the grant, they (opposition) chose not to stand with us." On the matter, Himachal Pradesh Leader of Opposition and BJP leader Jairam Thakur said, "False statements are continuously being made in the Assembly. The Chief Minister was presenting incorrect figures. If Himachal Pradesh is not receiving the Revenue Deficit Grant now, the responsibility lies with the present Congress government, which failed to effectively plead the state's case." Himachal Pradesh Assembly Speaker Kuldeep Singh Pathania also spoke to the media regarding the same issue. He said," The issue of RDG had serious implications for Himachal Pradesh and other hill states, especially in light of recommendations of the 16th Finance Commission. There was a detailed discussion over two days, and members were given adequate time. The resolution was put to a vote and passed by a majority. It will now be sent to the Parliament and the Central Government. We hope a positive decision will be taken in the interest of Himachal Pradesh." Earlier on Wednesday, the Himachal Pradesh Assembly witnessed dramatic scenes and repeated disruptions after Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu began replying to a discussion on a government resolution moved under Rule 102 regarding the situation arising from the discontinuation of the Revenue Deficit Grant (RDG). Responding to the debate, Sukhu said the RDG was stopped on February 1 and that his immediate effort thereafter was to gather feedback from all stakeholders. He asserted that RDG is not the right of any government but the right of the people of the state, adding that its importance is enshrined in the Constitution and that it is a constitutional entitlement. The Chief Minister said an all-party meeting was convened in the interest of the state and without any political motive. He alleged that BJP state president Rajeev Bindal was not prepared to speak on RDG during the all-party meeting and that, at Bindal's request, the venue of the meeting was shifted from the Secretariat to Peterhoff. Sukhu said a three-day Assembly session was called to deliberate on issues affecting all sections of society. He questioned the Opposition's stand, stating that they were unable to clarify whether they supported or opposed the discontinuation of RDG. He warned that the stoppage of RDG would require a 15 per cent cut in the state budget. This story has been sourced from a third party syndicated feed, agencies. 19 February,2026 10:54 AM IST | Shimla | ANICongress leader Pawan Khera on Wednesday attacked the government over Galgotias University's "robodog" controversy at the AI Impact Summit, saying the event was supposed to be a platform for innovation and exchange of ideas but "BJP reduced it to a cheap China Bazaar". In a post on X, Khera also slammed Union Minister for Electronics and IT Ashwini Vaishnaw, saying that he has proved that in India AI means "Ashwini is Incompetent." "'@AshwiniVaishnaw has proved that in India AI means "Ashwini is Incompetent.' As for the 'Pradhan (Tamasha) Mantri' - every event is a Jhappi-Pappi Fest. This was supposed to be an AI Summit - a platform for innovation and exchange of ideas. BJP reduced it to a cheap China Bazaar," he said. He also attached a video in which he slammed the government. Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) Secretary S Krishnan said on Wednesday that they want genuine and actual work to be reflected in the way that people exhibit in expos such as AI Summit 2026 and a code should be followed. Talking to the media here, he said misinformation cannot be encouraged. Answering a query on Galgotias University vacating the stall at the AI Impact Expo 2026, Krishnan said he is not getting into whether they are right or wrong and "just don't want the controversy". "We want genuine and actual work to be reflected in the way that people exhibit in expos. The idea is not to sort of use this as an opportunity in any other fashion. We don't want the controversy surrounding the exhibits presented here. So I think it's essential that a code is followed there. Misinformation cannot be encouraged. So we don't want the controversy around this. I'm not getting into whether they are right or wrong. We just don't want the controversy," he said. The Galgotias University staff and officials on Wednesday vacated their stall at the India AI Impact Summit expo, following controversy over the display of a "Chinese" robodog. According to sources, the authorities had asked Galgotias University to vacate its expo stall. Galgotias University Registrar Nitin Kumar Gaur on Wednesday issued a press release on behalf of the University and apologized for the confusion created at the Al Summit. "We at Galgotias University, wish to apologise profusely for the confusion created at the recent Al Summit. One of our representatives, manning the pavilion, was ill-informed. She was not aware of the technical origins of the product and in her enthusiasm of being on camera, gave factually incorrect information even though she was not authorised to speak to the press," the release said. "We request your kind understanding as there was no institutional intent to misrepresent this innovation. Galgotias University remains firmly committed to academic integrity, transparency, and responsible representation of our work. Understanding the organisers sentiment we have vacated the premises," it added. Gaur earlier issued a clarification amid growing controversy over the display of a "Chinese" RoboDog at the AI Impact Summit. Speaking to ANI, Gaur explained that the confusion stemmed from the use of the words "develop" and "development." He clarified that the university did not develop the robot but had worked on its development for academic and research purposes. "This is a jumble of two words, develop, and development. We didn't develop it. We worked on its development... We want to bring them, just like that robot was brought, and an effort was made to get students to do research on it," Gaur said. Referring to a viral video in which Professor Neha Singh introduced the RoboDog as "Orion" during the AI expo, Gaur suggested there may have been a misunderstanding in the wording. "I can say that perhaps she (Professor Neha) might have been confused by the words "develop" and "development" in the flow. But the truth is that we bought this robot for children's research... If China is making the claim, then maybe it (robodog) could be bought from China... I haven't received any such official communication yet (on vacating the expo)," Gaur said.
