Condolences flood social networking sites like Twitter, Facebook and Orkut
Messages like "May the comrade rest in peace," "he will always remain in the hearts of every Calcuttan, every politician, every Indian." "red Salute" started flooding social networking sites like Twitter, Facebook and Orkut.
Within few hours of his death, more than 400 people joined the community, RIP Jyoti Basu on Facebook, and started sharing their feelings at the leader's death.
Men who matter
And not all of those who posted condolence messages are unknown fans.
"Met Jyoti Basu only once. He was already out of power; but gave me the impression that he was sum1 who would never know the absence of power," read a Tweet posted by Anand Mahindra, boss of the $7-billion Mahindra Group.
"I loved Jyoti Basu and what he stood for. The Bengali bhadralok (gentleman). He loved his whiskey and his Marxism, in that order. Impeccable man," tweeted filmmaker Pritish Nandy.
"Jyoti Basu, 1914-2010. RIP (Rest In Peace)," said a tweet from Shashi Tharoor, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs.
Meanwhile, Amitabh Bachchan, who visited Basu at the hospital during his short visit to Kolkata on Saturday night, wrote in his blog: "Lesson, crowds and excitement over I travel to the AMRI Hospital to visit an ailing Jyoti Basu ex-Chief Minister of Bengal and one that remained in that position for a record 27 years !"
