Brothers Chandrashekhar and Chandrakeerti, who run a software company in the city, have also allegedly cheated around 40 others in a similar fashion.

The victims claim that the police are reluctant to take action against the brothers, because Chandrakeerti is an ex-Mayor's son-in-law. They also alleged that some police officers have been bribed to keep their mouths shut.

The accused had no qualms lying about their caste to gain their victim's confidence. They would identify people in need of money, and approach them.

After the victims were convinced, they would take their signatures on documents that gave them the general power of attorney on property owned by the victims, They wouldsay this was required to get quick loans.

u00a0After having procured the documents, they would deposit them in various banks as a surety to avail loans.

As soon as the loan the loan was issued in their names, the duo would default on the EMI's and disappear with the money. As a result, the bank would end up seizing the property.

The duo handed over the drawn amount to Sunderraj Naidu, an ex- mayor, who is now running a successful hotel business in Basaveshwar Nagar.

When the victims approached the brothers, they said the funds would be delayed due to a technical problem.

Finally, when the victims started pestering them, the brothers hired bodyguards, and threatened them. That kept the victims to approach the police.

u00a0Basaveshwar Nagar Police Inspector H Hanumantappa said, "We have arrested an agent but the main accused have succeeded to get bail, and further investigations are going on."

The Chandrashekhar brothers have shifted their Esika Infotech Private Limited office to J P Nagar from Koramangala and they were not available for comment.
