A 25-year-old from Mumbai was arrested for taking selfies while lying on a railway crossing near Aurangabad, on Monday. The youth has been identified as Akash Gaikwad, a resident of Chembur.
According to a report in Times of India, a few coaches passed over him, but Gaikwad luckily escaped unhurt. The driver did apply brakes on seeing the youth lying on the tracks. However, the train could not come to a halt instantly.
Railway staffers and passersby then pulled him out from under the train and handed him over to Railway Protection Force (RPF), the report added.
The TOI report further said that the RPF arrested him on charges of attempt to suicide and under sections 147 (trespassing) and 174 (halting a train) of the Railway Act. He was later released on bail.
RPF officials informed the paper that Gaikwad had come to Aurangabad to see his sister. In the morning, around 8 am, he went near the crossing and started taking selfies. But, on seeing a Jalna-Demu train coming, he lay face down on the tracks. His phone fell down from his hands, but he still stayed on the tracks.
