New Delhi: Three people have been arrested in connection with the death of Nido Taniam, a 19-year-old student from Arunachal Pradesh, police said on Monday.

Tania was beaten up by shopkeepers Jan 29 in south Delhi's Lajpat Nagar market following a quarrel over his appearance and clothing. He died in a hospital Thursday.

Police refused to disclose the identity of the three people arrested, saying investigation in the case is on. However, they added that the arrested were allegedly involved in assaulting the victim.

"During investigations conducted in the unfortunate death of Tania, Delhi Police have identified six people, of whom two are juveniles, to be allegedly involved in the case," Delhi Police spokesperson Rajan Bhagat said.

He added that the final post-mortem report from the medical board of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences is awaited. This report will also take toxicology report from CFSL into consideration.

A murder case was lodged over Tania's death and a special investigation team was constituted under the direct supervision of DCP South-East.

During investigation and videographic analysis, it emerged that Tania was brought by a PCR van to the police station and later he was taken back to the spot where the initial fight took place.

Police said he was brought back to the police station and later handed over to his local guardian.

Various organisations and students from the northeastern states held demonstrations and protests in different parts of the city while demanding justice for Tania.

Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi Monday met a group of students from the northeast and assured justice and strict action.
