A cherry mood, low expectations and an aversion for caffeine will do you a worldu00a0of good for your time at Kaffe Kona

A balmy Sunday evening would make anyone grumpy. The traffic at Andheri Link Road adds to it. Caffeine would help, we think, as we step into the cafe next to Fame Adlabs.

Despite its two-page rant about the exotic, exclusive Kona coffee, Kaffe Kona didn't have any for us. Why? The coffee machine wasn't working.

Umm, okay. Grumpier, we settle for a Blueberry Thrill (Rs 99) and Chicken Fingers (Rs 129).

The interiors are forgettable, we preferred their severe black-themed decor at the Wadala IMAX Adlabs branch.

The Blueberry Thrill came first. It's an icy purple sorbet beaten into a shake with ice cream for company.

Cold, mild and yum, it's a nice pep-up. Chicken Fingers aren't exactly an imaginative item on any menu, and this serving wasn't either.

Uniformly thick, batter-fried strips of chicken are served alongside a mayonnaise dip and the regular green salad. The batter's too thick; you have to chew past a heavy layer of bread before getting to the meat.

Next, we opt for the amusingly named Falafel Bullets, along with a portion of Spaghetti Siciliano
(Rs 199), apparently the ladies' favourite as the menu proudly proclaims.

The Falafel Bullets (Rs 119) are mini falafels (which resemble south-Indian dal vadas), circling a creamy centrespread of hummus, complete with an oil-dripping slice of olive.

The bullets aren't too impressive but the hummus is smooth and delicious. Strangely, we aren't served pita bread and we're too grumpy to ask.

Spaghetti Siciliano.

We're scooping mouthfuls of the hummus with the falafels, when the deep white dish full of our supposed favourite arrives at the table.

Nothing to call it a "lady's" favourite: it's a bowlful of red saucy spaghetti with a mish-mash of veggies and cream. Not bad, not terrific. But a big portion.

Ultimately, Kaffe Kona isn't the kind of place you'd choose to visit. You'll spot it, enter on an impulse, and if you're lucky, their coffee machine will be functioning.
