This year onwards, lexicography ufffd the art of compiling, writing and editing dictionaries ufffd will be taught as a two-year MA course in Deccan College. The option will be available to English and Sanskrit students.

Five students have already signed up for the unique course. "It is encouraging that UGC has given its approval for this course. The college is working on a Sanskrit dictionary project and students joining this course will be absorbed as research scholars by the college itself. They will also be able to pursue a PhD in lexicography," said Dr Vinayak Bhatt, director, Deccan College.

Dr S D Sathe,u00a0 Lexicography HOD, said many more students were expected to enrol. "I am excited about the course. There are plenty of Sanskrit students who are keen to join. We are admitting BA and BSc students who have studied some Sanskrit," Sathe said. Dr Pradnya Kulkarni, a lexicography professor, said, "Lexicography will help understand each Vedic word with its varied connotations. This science will help us showcase our Vedic treasure before the world in a modern manner and a defined purpose," she said.
