Punekars say one-way traffic plan on FC and JM Road is a bad idea

One-way traffic on Ferguson College and Jangli Maharaj Road is a bad idea

What was meant to be an idea to ease pedestrians' woes has ended up annoying them. Pedestrians are finding it increasingly difficult to cross the road because of a one-way traffic plan implemented at Ferguson College and Jangli Maharaj Road. Collegians and professionals say it was easier to cross the road when it was two-way because only one signal functioned at a time.

Shivaji Birajdar, a BA psychology student, says crossing the road is a hazardous task. Shivaji who travels from FC Road to JM Road to board a bus said, "It is extremely difficult to cross the road because vehicles travel in full speed. It's scary because at times, I have been in the middle of the road to avoid a vehicle when another zooms from the other side. We have to wait for the constant stream of vehicles to slow down."

Sukhada Gore, a Std XII student of Garware College, says it's difficult to walk on the road. "One cannot blame the vehicles for speeding because the roads are broad. At times, motorists have been nice to slow down when they see people crossing. But most of the time, nobody cares," explained Gore.

The PMC has promised to look into the problem and build speed breakers on the stretch. The plan, however, is still on paper. Except for a new speed breaker that was built in front of the Bal Gandharva main gate, nothing has been done.
