A policeman was arrested for allegedly killing a man after he refused to pay him Rs.50 bribe for moving into a no-entry zone, authorities said Tuesday.

The incident happened in Panki area of Kanpur district Monday.

Irshad, a truck driver, and his assistant Siyaram were assaulted by two constables Lal Singh and Surendra Kumar after they refused to pay Rs.50 bribe to the two constables.

"After ruthlessly beating Siyaram and Irshad, the two constables escaped when they noticed the condition of the victims was deteriorating. Later, Siyaram succumbed to injuries on way to hospital," police inspector Sanjay Kumar told reporters in Kanpur, some 80 km from here.

Singh was arrested late Monday.

"The two policemen have been booked for murder, and also placed under suspension with immediate effect," Sanjay added.
