Weeks after Ajit Pawar plane crash, DGCA grounds four VSR aircraft for lapses

Weeks after Baramati plane crash that killed former Maharashtra Deputy CM Ajit Pawar, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) on Tuesday, ordered immediate grounding of four aircraft operated by VSR Ventures after finding multiple compliance lapses. The action follows after fatal plane crash near Baramati on January 28 involving a Learjet 45 owned by the company. NCP chief Ajit Pawar and four others were killed in the incident. After the crash of the Learjet 45 (VT-SSK), the DGCA conducted a special safety audit of VSR Ventures. According to the regulator, a multi-disciplinary audit team found several non-compliances in areas including airworthiness, air safety and flight operations. The DGCA said there were serious gaps in maintenance procedures. An official statement by DGCA on Tuesday said that as a corrective measure, the regulator grounded Learjet 40/45 aircraft bearing registrations VT-VRA, VT-VRS, VT-VRV and VT-TRI until continued airworthiness standards are restored. The aviation regulator has also asked the company to submit a root cause analysis report. Further action will be decided after reviewing the submission. Rohit Pawar reacts NCP (SP) leader Rohit Pawar wrote on X that he had repeatedly raised concerns about VSR Ventures allegedly not following compliance norms. He said the grounding of four aircraft showed that the issue was serious, but added that it was “only the tip of the iceberg” and more details would emerge soon. "We have been repeatedly raising the issue that VSR company is not following any compliances and is operating aircraft in an extremely arbitrary and unsafe manner. Today, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has grounded four of VSR’s aircraft on the very same issue of non-compliance. Although our struggle is beginning to see success, this is only the tip of the iceberg. There is still much more yet to come to light. I will speak in detail on this matter tomorrow morning," Rohit Pawar wrote on X. Crash killed Ajit Pawar and four others The Learjet 45 crash near Baramati killed Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar and four others. The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) is probing the incident and is expected to release a preliminary report before February 28.

HSC board exam paper leak: Maharashtra forms SIT to probe case

Maharashtra Police have formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the suspected HSC board exam paper leak. As reported by PTI, the six-member SIT will trace the source of the leaked papers and identify all persons involved. The matter surfaced on February 18 during the chemistry exam at St Ursula High School in Nagpur when a supervisor found the question paper on a student's mobile phone before the start of the exam. The chemistry and physics question papers of Maharashtra board’s class 12 exam were reportedly leaked. In regard to the paper leak, police have so far arrested four accused, including coaching institute operators. While the investigators believe the paper was circulated through a WhatsApp group among students, further investigation by the SIT may lead to the basic roots of the paper leak.  Earlier, on February 21, screenshots of the Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) Chemistry paper began doing the rounds on messaging platforms shortly before the exam commenced. The paper was allegedly circulated on social media before the examination triggered concern among students and parents. As per the reports, there are allegations that the paper was leaked prior to distribution at examination centres. Soon after the incident was reported on Friday, officials said that local police have initiated a probe to verify the authenticity of the circulated paper and to determine whether it matches the actual question paper administered by the Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (MSBSHSE). Furthermore, the Education Department authorities were also alerted. Board officials also reportedly cross-checked the viral content with the original paper to assess whether there had been any breach in protocol.  The Maharashtra SSC exam 2026 begins on February 20 A total of 1,615,489 students from across Maharashtra have registered for the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examination to be conducted by the Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (MSBSHSE) in February-March 2026. The examinations have already begun on February 20 (Friday) and will go on till March 18 (Wednesday).  MSBSHSE will conduct the exams through its nine divisional boards at Pune, Nagpur, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Mumbai, Kolhapur, Amravati, Nashik, Latur and Konkan. Of the total students who have registered for this examination, 865,740 are boys, 749,736 are girls, and 13 are transgender students.  The official timetable was published on the Board’s website on 15 October 2025. Registration has been completed through 23,683 schools, and the examination will be conducted at 5119 main centres across the state, informed Dr Deepak Mali, secretary, Maharashtra State Board, Pune. The first round of negotiations for the proposed India-Israel Free Trade Agreement (FTA) has begin in Delhi and will continue until February 26 as PM Modi is scheduled to visit Tel Aviv on Wednesday. As per the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during the ongoing negotiations, will also be meeting Israeli counterparts on February 25-26. The ministry said that the timing of the talks provides fresh momentum to deepen economic ties between the two countries, reported IANS.  The Terms of Reference (ToR) for the agreement were signed in November 2025, creating a structured framework for discussions aimed at expanding trade and economic cooperation. The FTA between India and Israel is expected to provide greater certainty and predictability to businesses, including micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), and help unlock new opportunities across sectors. Trade between India and Israel stood at USD 3.62 billion in 2014-25 According to the reports, the total merchandise trade between India and Israel stood at USD 3.62 billion in FY 2024-25. Both countries have complementary strengths in areas such as innovation, science and technology, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, high-tech manufacturing, agriculture and services. The ministry also believes that the agreement could significantly boost bilateral trade by leveraging these synergies. During the opening session, Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal said, “Negotiations had started at an opportune time, aligning with the Prime Minister’s visit to Israel,” as per IANS.  He further highlighted the strong potential for collaboration in advanced technology sectors and said the FTA would help both sides fully utilise emerging opportunities. PM Modi to visit Israel for two days to strengthen defence and trade ties

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will undertake a two-day visit to Israel beginning Wednesday to shore up bilateral defence and trade cooperation amid the ongoing tensions in the Middle-east including deteriorating ties between the US and Iran. Modi's engagements will include his address to Israel's parliament, wide-ranging talks with his Israeli counterpart Benjamin Netanyahu and a meeting with President Isaac Herzog. "This visit will reaffirm the deep and long-standing strategic partnership between the two countries and will present an opportunity to review the common challenges as well as realign efforts towards achieving their shared vision for a robust partnership between two resilient democracies," the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said. It is learnt that boosting overall defence and security cooperation will be a major area of discussions during delegation level talks between the two prime ministers on Thursday. Netanyahu is scheduled to host a private dinner for Modi on Wednesday night. It will be Modi's second visit to Israel in nine years. The India-Israel relationship was elevated to the level of strategic partnership during Modi's first visit to that country in July, 2017. Netanyahu had made a return visit to India in January 2018. India and Israel share a robust strategic partnership with strong cooperation across science and technology, innovation, defence and security, trade and investment, agriculture, water, and people-to-people relations. "The two leaders will review the significant progress made in India-Israel Strategic Partnership, and discuss further opportunities in various areas of cooperation, including science and technology, innovation, defence and security, agriculture, water management, trade and economy, and people to people exchanges," the MEA said in a statement. It said the leaders are also expected to exchange perspectives on regional and global issues of mutual interest. In their talks, the two prime ministers are also likely to deliberate on the prevailing situation in the Middle-East including in Gaza. Following the outbreak of the Israel-Iran conflict in June last, Netanyahu and Modi spoke twice on the phone. On October 9, Modi dialled Netanyahu and congratulated him on the progress made under President Donald Trump's Gaza peace plan. There has been an upswing in the India-Israel ties in the last few years including in the areas of defence, scientific research, cybersecurity and innovation. The defence cooperation has emerged as an important pillar of the partnership between the two sides with Israel supplying a plethora of military platforms and weapon systems to India. In November last, during the visit of India's defence secretary to Israel, an important agreement on defence cooperation was signed. As India is looking at developing an indigenous air defence shield called "Sudarshan Chakra", it is learnt that New Delhi would like to explore the possibility of incorporating certain elements from Israel's Iron Dome all-weather air defence system that can intercept and destroy missiles and artillery shells. The trade and investment ties between the two sides are also witnessing steady progress. During the visit to Israel of Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal in November, the term of reference (ToR) for the launch of Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiations between India and Israel was signed. In September, the two sides had inked a Bilateral Investment Agreement (BIA) to expand economic cooperation. The people-to-people ties between the two countries are also an important aspect of the overall relations with over 41,000-strong Indian diaspora playing a key role in the two-way engagement. In November 2023, India and Israel signed a bilateral framework agreement to facilitate the temporary and legal employment of Indian workers in Israel. Since then, 20,000 Indians arrived in Israel, both under the Government-to-Government route and through private channels, according to officials. Delhi court remands IYC chief Uday Bhanu Chib to four-day police custody

A Delhi court on Tuesday remanded Indian Youth Congress (IYC) National President Uday Bhanu Chib to four days of police custody following his arrest in connection with the shirtless protest held during the India AI Impact Summit at Bharat Mandapam. Chib was produced before the Patiala House Court after his arrest by the Delhi Police earlier in the day. The investigating agency sought seven days of custodial interrogation, submitting that Chib was the “main conspirator and mastermind” behind the incident. Opposing the plea, the defence argued against prolonged custody, while the prosecution contended that custodial interrogation was essential to uncover the larger conspiracy. After hearing both sides, the Patiala House Court allowed four days of police custody for further investigation. According to the grounds of arrest, Chib has been accused of being the main conspirator in organising an unlawful assembly on February 20 at Bharat Mandapam during the AI Summit and Expo 2026, where alleged anti-national slogans were raised, and attempts were made to incite a riot-like situation. Police further alleged that Chib, along with co-accused Krishna Hari, Kundan Yadav, Narasimha Yadav, Ajay Kumar Yadav and others, obstructed and assaulted police officials performing their duties. The arrest memo also stated that he allegedly did not cooperate during interrogation and failed to disclose details about the absconding co-accused and the source of printing the T-shirts used during the protest. Chib was arrested after nearly 15 hours of questioning at Tilak Marg police station in connection with the shirtless protest staged on the final day of the India AI Impact Summit. The protest had triggered a political row, with the Bharatiya Janata Party criticising the demonstration as an attempt to tarnish India’s global image, while the Congress party defended it as a peaceful protest reflecting concerns of the youth. Bombay HC quashes case against octogenarian accused of dishonouring tricolour

The Bombay High Court has set aside a criminal case filed against an 85-year-old man who was accused of dishonouring the national flag during a Republic Day celebration in 2017. The court observed that the man’s “mere presence” at the ceremony, where the tricolour was allegedly unfurled upside down, did not amount to a crime. Case registered after flag found upside down The incident took place during a Republic Day function at the man’s residential housing society. According to the complaint, residents had gathered for the celebration. Later in the evening, a police patrol team noticed that the national flag had been hoisted upside down. Following this, a case was registered at Tilak Nagar police station against the senior citizen and five other residents under the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act. In his plea before the court, the 85-year-old man said he was suffering from age-related ailments and had only attended the ceremony. He claimed he had not unfurled the flag. He also argued that the terrace of the housing society, where the flag was hoisted, was not a public place. Court finds no evidence of intent Justice Ashwin Bhobe, hearing the matter, noted that the FIR only mentioned the man’s presence at the event and did not show that he had hoisted or displayed the flag. “Similarly, there is no material on record to show that any act of the applicant was intended to insult or show disrespect to the honour of the national flag,” the court said. The judge further clarified that intention is necessary to prove such an offence. “Mens rea (intent) to cause insult or disrespect, or to bring the Indian National Flag into contempt, would be required,” the court observed as per PTI reports. The High Court concluded that simply being present at the ceremony does not amount to an offence under the law and quashed the case against the senior citizen. (With PTI Inputs)

Indian students in Iran write to PM as March exams block return

Amid growing concerns over the evolving situation in Iran, several Indian students—particularly those from Jammu and Kashmir—have expressed their desire to return home but say they are unable to do so because of upcoming examinations scheduled for March, news agency ANI reported. #WATCH | Tehran, Iran: On the situation in Iran, Mohammad Momin Khan, President of J&K All India Medical Students Association (AIMSA) says, "The Indian High Commission in Tehran issued an advisory, in which they have asked their citizens to return. However, we have received… pic.twitter.com/s4e5ow344O — ANI (@ANI) February 24, 2026 Many of these students are enrolled in medical programmes at universities across Iran. According to them, their institutions have not announced any postponement of exams despite the current uncertainty. This has placed students in a difficult position: either stay back to complete exams or return to India and risk losing an academic year. The uncertainty has also led to significant psychological stress among students and worry for their families. The All India Medical Students Association (AIMSA) has formally raised the matter with the Central government. In a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the association urged immediate intervention, requesting that the Indian government coordinate with Iranian authorities and universities to explore the possibility of postponing examinations so students can safely return home without jeopardising their academic progress, ANI reported. Bilal Bhat, an Indian student currently studying in Iran, told ANI over Zoom that anxiety levels among students have risen sharply in recent weeks. “We want to come back home. Our families are worried. But our exams are scheduled in March and there is no clarity on postponement. If we miss exams, it will affect our academic year,” he said. Another student, Musafid, echoed the concerns of his peers. Iran-US Tensions: 'Flights are operational, but we don’t know what may happen next' “We are constantly monitoring the situation. Flights are operational, but we don’t know what may happen next. Our only concern is safety and our studies,” he said, highlighting the dilemma faced by many pursuing professional degrees abroad. Mohammad Momin Khan, President of J&K AIMSA, said the association has formally approached the Prime Minister’s Office seeking urgent assistance. He emphasised that students are not requesting immediate evacuation at this stage, but are seeking diplomatic intervention to ensure academic schedules are adjusted if necessary. Families of students back home are closely monitoring developments, hoping for clarity in the coming days. Meanwhile, many students remain in a wait-and-watch mode, balancing academic responsibilities with safety concerns amid the uncertain geopolitical situation.  (With ANI inputs)

Rahul Gandhi says PM Modi should scrap anti-farmer India-US trade deal

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi should scrap the Indo-US trade deal, which he described as being against the interests of Indian farmers. Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, while addressing the Kisan Mahachaupal farmers rally in Bhopal, said, "After the US Supreme Court ruling on the trade deal, I challenge PM Modi to scrap it," as cited by news agency PTI.  Gandhi also added, “The Indo-US trade deal is against the interests of our farmers and was done by PM Modi under pressure." The Congress leader also said that he was not allowed to speak in the Lok Sabha after the President's address. Talking about former army chief Gen Naravane's memoir, Gandhi said that the decision to go to war is a political decision and not a military one. Earlier during the Parliamentary budget session 2026, Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday cited former Army Chief MM Naravane’s “unreleased memoir” to claim that Prime Minister Narendra Modi shed responsibility during the India-China conflict in 2020 and passed the buck on to Naravane. Rahul Gandhi, while speaking in Lok Sabha, held up Naravane’s unreleased memoir and said he would like the youngsters in India to know that this ‘book’ exists despite the government claiming otherwise. “Every youngster in India should read this book,” he added. The former Congress president also said that Naravane has written the full account of what happened in Ladakh.  “This book clearly states that when the Chinese army had entered our border, in such a critical moment, the army chief was made to wait. And when the time came to make a decision, the PM simply said, 'Jo aapko uchit lage woh kijiye,' Gandhi further asserted.  Rahul Gandhi exchanges words with Ravneet Bittu Rahul Gandhi exchanged barbs with former party colleague and Union Minister Ravneet Singh Bittu in the Parliament premises. In a video, Gandhi was heard calling Bittu “a traitor", and the minister retorted with the “desh ke dushman” (enemy of the nation) jibe. The incident took place right outside Parliament’s Makar Dwar. As soon as Gandhi was about to speak, Bittu passed by and remarked, “The suspended Congress MPs are sitting here as if they have won a war." Gandhi hit back, “There is a traitor walking right by." Maharashtra among key states as Centre approves Rs 9,072 crore railway projects

Maharashtra is among the key states as the Central Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday approved Rs 9,072 crore railway expansion projects. The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs approved three Railway Ministry projects worth around Rs 9,072 crore. The projects include doubling of the Gondia-Jabalpur rail section and laying of third and fourth lines on the Punarakh-Kiul and Gamharia-Chandil sections. According to the government, the projects will expand the Indian Railways network by about 307 kilometres. The works will cover eight districts across Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar and Jharkhand. Officials said the improved rail network will enhance connectivity for nearly 5,407 villages with a combined population of around 98 lakh people, according to the PTI. The additional lines are expected to reduce congestion, improve operational efficiency and make train services more reliable. The Railway Ministry said the projects are aligned with the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan, which focuses on multi-modal connectivity and better logistics planning, as per the PTI. The upgraded routes will also improve access to tourist destinations such as the Kachnar Shiv Temple, Kanha National Park, Pench National Park, Dhuandhar Falls, Chandil Dam and Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary, among others, the news agency reported. Freight and economic benefits The routes are important for transporting commodities such as coal, steel, iron ore, cement, fertilisers and foodgrains. The ministry said the increased capacity will allow additional freight movement of about 52 million tonnes per annum (MTPA). It added that railways, being an energy-efficient and environmentally friendly mode of transport, will help reduce logistics costs and cut oil imports by around six crore litres. Carbon dioxide emissions are expected to fall by nearly 30 crore kilograms, which the government said is equivalent to planting one crore trees, the PTI reported. Focus on self-reliance The ministry stated that the railway projects are part of the government’s vision of building a self-reliant India (Atmanirbhar Bharat) by creating better infrastructure and increasing employment and self-employment opportunities in the region, as per the PTI.
