| Several locals were asked by the Amber Fort Authority to close their shops and vacate their houses if they failed to furnish ownership documents of their properties within three days. "We were harassed and asked to move out of our properties after these havelis were bought in 2008. The new owners needed the space to create parking facilities and swimming pools for the heritage hotels. Almost 350 such legal notices were issued to families who live in Bengali Pada and Narsingh colony," said Pradeep Umar Chatterji, a refreshment seller. "We were frightened to stand up against the notice because we knew that the ruling BJP government was with Lalit Modi. Some of the residents sold their properties and I was forced to close my shop for a month during peak season. This was when we realised we needed to take a tough stand and went to court, which issued a stay order on the hotels' construction,"he added. |
