If there is no improvement in scrime control, it clearly reflects negligence and laxity on the part of the police," she told police officials at a day-long meeting held at her official residence yesterday.

Fixing responsibility, she said: "Henceforth district police chiefs and deputy inspector generals (DIGs) would be directly held responsible for any spurt in crime under their respective jurisdictions."
Passing the buck
An official spokesman told mediapersons, "The chief minister took strong exception against the tendency of senior officers to pass the buck to their subordinates."
She also took serious note of the "increasing clout of anti-social element and outlaws in all walks of life" and called for stern action against them.

Criticising custodial deaths that have been on the rise in the state, Mayawati attributed them to "negligent and apathetic" attitudes of senior police officials.

"If such incidents are repeated, deterrent punishment would be given to the guilty officials," she said.
Curb corruption
Mayawati was also very firm about curbing corruption in the police rank and file.
"Last month I had ordered closure of all trade tax check-posts, but I am now told that these have been replaced by self-styled police check posts where cops indulge in extortion," she said.
"I do not want to receive these complaints any more otherwise you will have to face serious consequences," she added.
