Panic gripped Airoli after a late-night firing incident in Sector-01 on Sunday, where an unidentified assailant opened fire at two youths around 11:50 pm.

According to police, the attacker fired four rounds near Chhatrapati Shivaji Nivasi Chawl, leaving RTI activist Amit Maurya critically injured after sustaining a bullet wound to the neck. The second victim, Sandeep Gawas, narrowly escaped unhurt.

Maurya was initially rushed to Indravati Hospital and later shifted to Fortis Hospital in Mulund due to his critical condition, officials said.

Rabale police, who reached the spot soon after the incident, recovered four empty cartridges and have begun scanning CCTV footage from the area. Preliminary visuals show the accused opening fire before fleeing the scene.

Police have formed multiple teams to trace the attacker, though the motive behind the firing remains unclear.

The incident has sparked fear among local residents, raising concerns over law and order in the Airoli area of Navi Mumbai.
