Available in a no-nonsense South Indian restaurant that whips up authentic, value-for-money uttapams and dosas

Kavis cafe
At: Navi Mumbai
Call: 9167166311
Cuisine: South Indian
Verdict: Excellent

South Indians in this part of town can rejoice. Kavis Caf ufffd opposite Juinagar railway station comes as a respite for those who travelled to Vashi or Chembur for their fix of authentic South Indian fare. The two month-old Kavis Caf ufffd is a well-lit small restaurant with four sets of plastic tables and chairs.

The menu features typical South Indian cuisine ranging from idlis and dosas to uttapams, the South Indian Thali and the rarely available Idiyappam and Vadakari. Starved from our trek to reach Juinagar, we quickly ordered the Rava Onion Masala Dosa (Rs 40) and Idiyappam (Rs 20).

Though we entered the restaurant at 9.40 pm, the sambar and chutney that accompanied our orders tasted fresh and delicious. The dosa and its potato filling got full marks for its taste and authenticity.

The Idiyappam (string hoppers, a culinary delight that usually served for breakfast or dinner) didn't disappoint either. The steamed dish was served with fresh chutney, although we would have liked a potato curry that usually accompanies it. The service was prompt and the portions, generous. Coming up on the menu: Appam, Vadai and Pongal.
