The first-ever escalator on the suburban railway system at Thane was thrown open to public today.
Built at an estimated cost of Rs 75 lakh, the escalator, which is 1.7 metres wide and can carry around 100 commuters per minute, is at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus-end of platforms 3 & 4, connecting the 12m Foot Over Bridge (FOB).
The escalator was formally inaugurated by Thane guardian minister Ganesh Naik amid presence of public representatives spanning all parties.
The escalator is being built for the convenience of the public, especially for the aged, pregnant women and disabled.
Central Railway will commission another one at Thane (platforms 5 & 6) and one at Dombivli. Western Railway's first escalator will come up at Vile Parle (E) in July.
