Women's Day celebrations continue with Lushin Dubey's one-woman performance in Untitled
Just when the clamour surrounding Women's Day is dying down, Raell Padamsee's Ace Productions brings Untitled. Enacted by Delhi stage actress Lushin Dubey, and directed by Arvind Gaur, the eight year-old production is a fusion of scripts, language and design. Based on Vijayadan Detha's story Nyari Nyari Maryada and Dario Fo's short play Medea, Untitled is "mostly in Hindi with a smattering of English". The highlight is Dubey's solo performance with a little help from puppets that represent various characters in the play. Dubey plays the ventriloquist.
In Detha's tale, a sweeper woman approaches the king's court for justice against the court pandit who has raped her daughter. The court silences her by saying men "need to have a change of taste". In retaliation, the queen decides to seek justice for the young girl and declares that she has changed her "taste" too. "It is essentially about how a woman renegotiates her boundaries created over the years, and carves out her own destiny -- good or bad," says Dubey.
