Pune: Avoid planning a trip to Lonavla or Khandala in the forthcoming three-day weekend. Pune Rural Police (PRP) has appealed to tourists to avoid these two destinations on grounds of safety and identified 15 spots where tourists will be prohibited from entering.

Safety mission
Additional Superintendent of Police (PRP) Rajkumar Shinde said, “While the picturesque hill stations are regular haunts of Pune and Mumbai citizens, especially during long weekends, we will dissuade them from visiting these places to avoid untoward incidences such as floods or landslides. While there is always the looming threat of floods in Pune, heavy rainfall and fog make Lonavla and Khandala unsafe during the monsoon. A landslide was reported at Karla Caves recently.”

Besides appealing to tourists, the police has also collaborated with local businessmen, hawkers and residents. Shinde said, “Locals have worked with us to help avoid incidents of drowning at dams this year. Last year, 19 cases of drowning had been reported, but there haven’t been any such reports so far.”

I-Day security
Police sources said that many officers would be deployed at key locations across the two hill stations to avoid security concerns, especially on Independence Day. “There’s plenty of VIP movement in Pune on Independence Day and a majority of our staff will be deployed for it. Besides, to avoid incidents of accidents caused by drunken driving, we have stocked up on 15 Alcohol Breath Testers. We had a meeting with local businesses and they have assured us that in case of heavy downpour, they will close shop by 2 pm.”

The officer also appealed to tourists to be careful while clicking selfies as two accidents pertaining to the same had been reported last week.
