Imagine Narayan Karthikeyan behind the wheels of a fast and furious Formula One car designed by Indians.
Phew!
Well, students of five best engineering colleges in India have been toiling to achieve that dream for months in their workshop, and are now set to vroom their designed Formula One car on the circuit of Silverstone in UK from July 16 to July 19.
"Last year, we were using 500 cc engine which helped us win 'Best Endeavor' award. This time our engine is a 600 cc UK-made Kawasaki zx6 Ninja and we have named the car 'TUFF 02'. Its space-age features include a frame that has been designed to make the structure light and strong enough to withstand loads during endurance tests. The body is made of plastic-reinforced glass-fibre, making it very light and visually attractive.

We expect to finish the race under 20 this year," said Puneet Singh Randhawa, team leader of Fateh Team of Thapar University.
After giving their best by designing 'VAYU' in coordination with 35 students and faculty earlier, IIT Bombay team claims that this year their car 'AGNI' will give everyone a tough competition. "The car is equipped with a Honda CBR 600 F4i motorcycle engine, and weighs just 275 kg including the driver. Various measures have been taken by the team to make the body weight lighter and the speed faster," said a team member.
While most of the teams emphasised to increase the capacity of their dream F1 car, Delhi College of Engineering has done just the opposite by concentrating more on the body weight. "The body weight of the car should be always light, is what we learnt from our past experience at Silverstone. We have used carbon fibre body and have installed 400cc engine, which will make the car zoom at the speed of 180 km/hr," explained Satyam Joshi, second year student and member of Defianz Racing team.
