What does it mean to be queer today? That's the question Kashish ufffd the Mumbai International Queer Film Festival attempts to answer through its selection of features, shorts, documentaries and experimental films, highlighting lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) narratives.
The festival is an attempt to encourage greater visibility of Indian and international queer cinema among LGBT as well as mainstream audiences. Around 110 films from 25 countries will be screened.
"We have been organising such festivals since 2003, starting with Larzish, the first queer film fest. But this is a landmark event as the films are moving from smaller venues to mainstream venues such as the PVR cinemas and Alliance Francaise," says Vivek Anand, CEO, Humsafar Trust and Festival Director.
Apart from the screenings on Saturday evening at PVR Juhu, there will be a performance by actor Mona Ambegaonkar of Ek, Madhav Baug: a play about a son "coming out" to his mother through his diary. The closing ceremony on Sunday will see the music release of the film Dunno Y Na Jaane Kyon, which is touted as being India's answer to Ang Lee's Brokeback Mountain.
