A wild tusker ran amock and trampled an old woman to death at Satmor area on Dehradun-Rishikesh road near here, officials on Friday said.

The incident occurred last night when 85-year-old Maheshwari Devi along with her son and daughter-in-law, was going to her daughter's house at Dhalwala area of Rishikesh by a car. Suddenly the tusker appeared from the nearby jungles and attacked the car.

While Devi's son and daughter-in-law got down from the car and managed to run away from the scene, the elephant caught her by its trunk. Later, the tusker hit Devi repeatedly against the ground which led to her instant death.

After getting information, the forest and police personnel reached the spot and fired shots in the air to scare away the elephant back to jungles. The deceased belonged to Dharampur area of Dehradun.
