Raut is facing trial in the Pujari murder case and in a case involving the kidnapping and murder of vegetable vendor Vishakha Mandal. He was lodged in jail and has been suffering from stomach and body ache. Although he was treated three times at the prison hospital, his condition did not improve. On a recommendation made by the medical officer of the jail, Raut, along with nine other inmates, was sent to Sassoon hospital around 11 am on September 17, 2011. At about 2 pm, Raut escaped after police naik Sumersingh Sursingh Patil (49) removed his handcuffs while taking him to the toilet. Patil has been dismissed from service.

Inspector Satish Govekar, in-charge of anti-dacoity cell, said, “The escape was pre-planned. Raut’s brother Manoj had made a duplicate key of a motorbike and had parked it at the hospital. When Raut escaped, Manoj gave him Rs 11,000, food, clothes and other items kept in a bag at the hospital.”

Assistant Commissioner of Police (Crime I) Rajendra Bhamare said, “Raut first went to Hadapsar and then travelled to North India by train from Daund.”

A police officer said, “We won’t spare anyone who helped him in escape and while he was on the run. The jail doctor who recommended taking Raut to Sassoon hospital is also under scanner.”

Manoj was arrested from his native village Golegaon in Khed block of Pune district. He has been charged under section 120 B (criminal conspiracy) and 216 (harbouring offender who has escaped from custody or whose apprehension has been ordered) of the Indian Penal Code. The court of judicial magistrate (first class) UL Pathak remanded Manoj in police custody till June 7.

Cops have also invoked section 468 (forgery) and 471 (using forged document as genuine) against Raut after a bogus PAN card and driving licence were recovered from him. Raut was re-arrested on May 31 from Shirdi when he arrived from Delhi, where he used to work as an office boy at an L&T-SUCG unit. Raut will remain in police custody till tomorrow.
