Union Home Minister Amit Shah will move a resolution in Lok Sabha to extend President’s rule in violence-hit Manipur for another six months, until February 13, 2026. After an intense discussion on Operation Sindoor in the Parliament, the Union Home Minister Amit Shah will move a resolution to extend the President's rule in the ethnic violence-hit state of Manipur for six months in the Lok Sabha.
The President's rule was imposed in Manipur on February 13, days after N. Biren Singh resigned from the Chief Minister's position. With the situation in the Northeast state still going through a tough period, the Union Home Minister is eyeing bringing peace to the state as soon as possible.
As reported by news agency ANI, the President's rule will be extended till February 13, 2026, after the Parliament's concession. Under the motion.
The statement on the list of business in Lok Sabha reads that "SHRI AMIT SHAH will move the following resolution: "That this House approves the continuance in force of the Proclamation, dated the 13th February, 2025, in respect of Manipur, issued under article 356 of the Constitution by the President, for a further period of six months with effect from 13th August, 2025," as reported by news agency ANI.
Earlier, on July 25, Amit Shah gave a statutory resolution to extend the already imposed President's rule in Manipur till February 13, 2026, which was admitted by the Rajya Sabha.
The Rajya Sabha Parliamentary Bulletin also stated that "this House approves the continuance in force of the Proclamation dated February 13, 2025, in respect of Manipur, issued under article 356 of the Constitution by the President, for a further period of six months with effect from August 13, 2025," as per ANI.
President Droupadi Murmu implemented President's rule in Manipur in February on the basis of a report from the state governor. Manipur Chief Minister Biren Singh resigned in response to the political instability and violence that had persisted in the state for nearly two years.
In another scenario, it has also been reported that the 'Merchant Shipping Bill, 2024' will also be introduced by the Union Minister of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, in conjunction with Amit Shah's motion to extend the President's rule.
According to the business statement stated in the Parliament, the bill's objective is to amend the law pertaining to merchant shipping in order to ensure that India's obligations under maritime treaties and international instruments to which it is a party are met, as well as to ensure the development of Indian shipping and the efficient maintenance of the Indian mercantile marine in a manner that is most appropriate for the national interest. Additionally, the bill will consider matters that are connected to or incidental to these objectives.
