Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister (CM) N Chandrababu Naidu on Wednesday said two deaths have been reported in the state due to the severe cyclonic storm Montha, noting that timely precautionary measures helped minimise the losses.
CM Naidu called upon the entire government machinery to continue relief efforts for another two days to provide further assistance to those affected by the cyclone, news agency PTI reported.
"If we work in the same way for another two days, we can give much relief to people. Due to the cyclone, two persons died," an official press release quoted the CM as saying.
He directed officials to restore normalcy at the earliest and asked ministers and senior officers to visit affected areas and personally enquire if people were facing any difficulties, the release said.
CM Naidu also asked officials to assess the damage caused by the cyclone across departments so that a comprehensive report could be submitted to the Centre.
Additionally, he instructed that essential items, including food and other relief materials, be distributed promptly among the affected people, reported PTI.
He also lauded the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), police, and fire services personnel for their efforts during the cyclone, particularly for clearing uprooted trees and snapped power lines on a war footing.
To expedite restoration of electricity, the CM said 10,000 personnel had been kept on standby, adding that normalcy was expected to be restored by Wednesday afternoon.
He took an aerial survey of the cyclone-affected areas and is expected to visit Bapatla, Palnadu, Krishna, Konaseema, and Eluru districts, the release said. Later, he is scheduled to land at Allavaram mandal in Konaseema district and proceed by road to inspect flooded fields, PTI reported.
Waterlogging in Hyderabad, heavy rainfall across Telangana
Meanwhile, several parts of Hyderabad experienced waterlogging due to heavy rainfall after Cyclone Montha made landfall off the Andhra Pradesh coast on Wednesday, news agency ANI reported.
Light to moderate rain was also reported in the Bhadradri Kothagudem and Mahabubnagar districts, while areas of the Rangareddy district witnessed showers as the cyclone’s impact extended across Telangana.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), heavy rainfall is likely over eastern and southern Telangana and adjoining areas on Wednesday due to the impact of Cyclone Montha, ANI reported. The weather in Hyderabad changed abruptly, bringing widespread rain to the city.
Cyclone Montha crossed the coast near Narasapuram, between Machilipatnam and Kakinada, between 11.32 pm and 12.30 am, before moving northwest, said Dr Karuna Sagar, a scientist at the meteorological department in Amaravati.
"The severe cyclonic storm over central Bengal moved west-northwestwards and it crossed yesterday over Andhra Pradesh coast, especially south of Kakinada, near Narsapur. So it crossed around midnight, 11.30 to 12.30, and further moved northwestwards and weakened into a cyclonic storm by 2.30 a.m. today. It will continue moving north-northwestwards and enter the Telangana region," Sagar told ANI.
