A senior finance ministry official was killed in a BMW-motorcycle collision near Dhaula Kuan on Sunday. The Delhi Police have taken the accused couple into custody following their discharge from hospital. The police have registered a case of culpable homicide against the accused.

Navjot Singh (52), who served as the Deputy Secretary in the Department of Economic Affairs, died on the Ring Road near Delhi Cantonment Metro Station. His wife has sustained serious injuries in the accident. The couple, who resided in Hari Nagar, was returning home after visiting the Bangla Sahib Gurdwara when their motorcycle was hit from behind by a blue BMW, driven allegedly at high speed.

The woman driver, identified as Gagan Preet Kaur, and her husband also sustained injuries in the accident. The Gurugram-based couple runs a business manufacturing leather saddles, seats, covers, belts and other products. Delhi Police confirmed that Gagan Preet was taken into custody on Monday after being discharged from the hospital.

The official’s wife said in her statement, “The blue BMW was being driven at a high speed, causing it to overturn on the road. Immediately after the collision, I began to lose consciousness and everything went dark. A woman and a male driver placed my husband and me into a van-like vehicle and started taking us somewhere.”

She further alleged that despite her repeated pleas to be taken to the nearest hospital, they were “taken to a small hospital far away…”

According to her, the couple were made to wait on a stretcher outside GTB Nagar hospital for a long time.

The official’s wife has suffered multiple fractures in her hands and legs, along with a head injury, for which she had to undergo 14 stitches. Her husband had sustained serious head and facial injuries.

Mohammad Gulfam, the van driver who rushed the victims to the hospital in Azadpur, corroborated the claim that the couple insisted on going to a hospital far from the accident site.

“Many bystanders were recording videos of the accident site immediately after it happened, but did not help. I was driving a loading vehicle, stopped and rushed the injured to a hospital in Azadpur after the man and the woman in the car asked me to take them there,” he said.

Gagan Preet Kaur and her husband were also admitted to hospital for treatment.

Meanwhile, the victims’ son and other family members later arrived at GTB Nagar hospital, from where the injured woman was subsequently transferred to Venkateshwar Hospital for further treatment.
