At least four people travelling in an SUV died after the vehicle fell nearly 500 feet into a gorge at Tamhini Ghat in Raigad district in Maharashtra, along the Pune-Mangaon road, officials said.
The exact time of the accident is not yet known, but authorities believe it may have taken place several days ago. Early reports suggest that the driver may have lost control of the vehicle, causing it to plunge into the deep valley.
A search and rescue operation is currently underway to check whether more passengers were inside the SUV at the time of the crash. Teams from Pune-based NGOs RESQ CT and SVRSS are assisting the authorities, and drones are being used to help locate any additional victims in the difficult terrain.
Officials said that the rescue effort is challenging due to the depth of the gorge and thick forest cover in the area.
