After the NDA’s Vice-Presidential candidate filed his nomination on Wednesday, the Opposition-backed candidate Justice (Retd) B Sudershan Reddy is set to file his nomination papers at 11:30 AM on August 21, 2025.
Justice Reddy, a former Supreme Court judge, was announced earlier this week as the Opposition nominee for the Vice Presidential post and Chairman of the Rajya Sabha. He will contest against the NDA nominee CP Radhakrishnan.
While CP Radhakrishnan was accompanied by Prime Minister Modi and several Union Ministers, the INDIA bloc leaders from across opposition parties are expected to join Justice Reddy during the filing of his nomination in Parliament.
According to ANI, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Wednesday said that B Sudershan Reddy’s candidature for the Vice Presidential election reflects the Opposition’s firm commitment to restoring “fairness, impartiality, and dignity” to the functioning of the Rajya Sabha.
Addressing a gathering of the INDIA bloc members at the Central Hall of Samvidhan Sadan, Kharge said opposition leaders have been denied the opportunity to raise matters of vital public concern in the Upper House. To prevent such “transgressions,” he stressed that Reddy’s election is crucial. The event was also attended by Justice (Retd) B Sudershan Reddy.
Kharge further stated, “In Parliament, we have witnessed a growing trend of stifling opposition voices. We are repeatedly denied the opportunity to raise issues of vital public concern in the House. To resist and act decisively against these transgressions, the nation needs an exemplary, impartial Justice. B Sudershan Reddy as Vice-President of India. His nomination represents our collective resolve to defend and uphold the democratic ideals that define India,” ANI reported.
The Congress chief also noted that “Reddy’s life and work reflect the spirit of our Constitution, a commitment to fairness, compassion, and the empowerment of every citizen,” ANI added.
The Election Commission had earlier announced that polling for the Vice Presidential election would take place on September 9, with counting of votes scheduled the same day.
The last date for filing nominations is August 21, while candidates can withdraw their nominations until August 25.
