In a major push towards environmental sustainability, the Latur Municipal Corporation has launched a large-scale tree plantation drive involving school students, aiming to plant 1.2 lakh saplings across the city.
According to the news agency PTI, the campaign, which began on Thursday, will involve students from 350 schools, who will plant and nurture the saplings provided free of cost by the Social Forestry and Forest Departments.
Municipal Commissioner Mansi Meena inaugurated the initiative by distributing saplings to students and urged teachers to take active responsibility in ensuring the saplings are properly cared for and survive.
According to civic officials, the initiative aims to make Latur a greener, cleaner, and more environmentally responsible city, while also fostering environmental awareness and a sense of responsibility among students.
Mumbai Metro Line-3 Embraces contactless travel and sustainable development
The newly inaugurated Mumbai Metro Line-3 marks a major step forward in sustainable urban transport, combining cutting-edge technology with a strong focus on environmental and social responsibility.
This underground corridor, one of India’s most ambitious infrastructure projects, supports the National Common Mobility Card (NCMC), enabling seamless, contactless travel across multiple modes of public transport. Its fully air-conditioned, barrier-free stations come equipped with Platform Screen Doors, ensuring both safety and commuter comfort.
Connecting six major business and employment hubs, Nariman Point, Fort, Lower Parel, BKC, SEEPZ, and MIDC, Metro-3 offers efficient access to over 30 educational institutions, 13 hospitals, and 30 recreational facilities. The line is expected to reduce pressure on Mumbai’s overburdened suburban railway system by 15 per cent, while cutting down 6.65 lakh daily vehicle trips and saving an estimated 3.54 lakh litres of fuel per day. These reductions will have a significant impact on both air and noise pollution in the city.
Mumbai Metro Line-3 is not just a transport project; it’s a model of sustainable development. The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL) has undertaken large-scale mangrove restoration, planted over 23,000 trees, and rehabilitated nearly 2,700 families displaced by the project, offering them ownership flats and rental assistance as part of its resettlement plan.
With advanced tunnelling, driverless train technology, and multimodal integration, Metro-3 is redefining how Mumbai moves, offering a faster, greener, and smarter way to commute in one of the world’s most densely populated cities.
