Air India Express cabin crew call off strike

Air India Express cabin crew on Thursday decided to withdraw their strike and the airline agreed to reinstate 25 staff who were terminated from service, according to sources. A section of the cabin crew started reporting sick from Tuesday night to protest against the alleged mismanagement at the airline, forcing cancellation of more than 170 flights and impacting thousands of passengers at various airports. The decisions to end the strike and withdraw the termination letters were agreed upon during a conciliation meeting between the representatives of cabin crew and the airline management at the Office of the Chief Labour Commissioner (Central) in the national capital on Thursday. The meeting, which went on for nearly five hours, was between representatives of Air India Express Employees Union (AIXEU) and airline management. The union is affiliated to the Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS), an associate of the RSS. After the meeting, Girish Chandra Arya, All India Secretary of the BMS, said the termination of 25 cabin crew of Air India Express has been withdrawn. Both parties will discuss the issues and there will be a meeting again on May 28, he said. After detailed discussion, persuasion and on appeal of the Conciliation Officer and the Chief Labour Commissioner, the union representatives agreed that "all the cabin crew members who have reported sick will report for duty with fitness certificate immediately, according to a document signed by the representatives of the union and the airline. "On appeal of the Chief Labour Commissioner (Central), the management agreed to reinstate 25 cabin crew who have been terminated on May 7 and 8, 2024 for reporting sick as a concerted action immediately. "The management will review the cases of these crew as per service regulations," it said. As per the document, the representatives of the airline assured that all the issues of cabin crew raised before the management and during conciliation proceedings will be looked into and resolved. Earlier in the day, the Tata Group airline said it has cancelled 85 flights or about 23 per cent of the total operational capacity due to cabin crew shortage and will be operating 283 flights. To minimise the disruptions, Air India is operating flights on 20 routes of Air India Express, which has curtailed services till May 13. Sources, earlier in the day, said around 250 cabin crew reported sick on Thursday. On Wednesday, the civil aviation ministry sought a report from Air India Express on the cancellation of flights and also asked the airline to resolve the issues promptly. Discontent has been brewing among a section of staff at Air India Express after the start of the process to merger AIX Connect, formerly AirAsia India, with itself. A section of the cabin crew has alleged mismanagement and lack of equality in the treatment of staff. A conciliation process is happening under the Industrial Disputes Act after a union representing a section of the Air India Express cabin crew had filed a complaint before the labour department last year. Room sharing, lack of proper support, revised salary structure and alleged differential treatment of experienced crew members of Air India Express are among the issues being flagged by the striking cabin crew. In a message to the airline's staff, Air India Express CEO Aloke Singh on Wednesday said since last evening, more than 100 cabin crew members have reported sick prior to their rostered flight duty, "at the last minute, severely disrupting our operations". "The disruptions have cascaded across the network, forcing us to curtail the schedules over the next few days. We had to do this to cope with the non-availability of crew and to recover schedules," Singh had said. He had also said the company leadership is available for any discussions if there are concerns that need to be addressed. Air India Express cabin crew's strike came a month after Tata Group full-service carrier Vistara witnessed pilot woes, forcing it to temporarily cut down capacity by 10 per cent, or 25-30 flights daily. As part of consolidating its airline business, Tata Group is merging Air India Express and AIX Connect, as well as Vistara with Air India. BJP insecure so discussing non-existent aspects of Congress manifesto: Chavan

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has turned insecure amid the Lok Sabha elections 2024 and was discussing issues that are not even mentioned in the Congress' manifesto, former Maharashtra chief minister and senior Congress leader Prithviraj Chavan said on Thursday, reported the PTI. Prithviraj Chavan was in Maharashtra's Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar to campaign for Chandrakant Khaire, Lok Sabha candidate of the Shiv Sena (UBT), which is an ally of the Congress and the NCP(SP) in the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA). "The BJP raises the slogan of 'abki baar 400 paar' but is insecure. That is why it is discussing issues (to attack the Congress) that are not even mentioned in our manifesto. We have said we will give Rs 1 lakh to poor women annually. Now this is something the BJP will not discuss," he said, as per the PTI. Queried about merger of parties, Chavan asserted people in Maharashtra generally do not like the presence of too many outfits. "Even I think small political parties will merge with other parties post Lok Sabha elections 2024," Prithviraj Chavan claimed, though he refused to name the parties he was referring to, according to the PTI. Brushing aside the impact of the All India Majlis e Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) in the polls in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Prithviraj Chavan claimed Muslims will vote for MVA. "In the 2019 polls the AIMIM was in alliance with Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi. That does not exist anymore," he pointed out. Voting in 3 phases unsettled PM Modi, he's openly mentioning Muslims community in speeches: Sharad Pawar Meanwhile, the NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar on Thursday said that voting in the first three phases of the ongoing Lok Sabha elections has unsettled Prime Minister Narendra Modi and he has openly started mentioning Muslim community in his speeches, reported the PTI. Talking to reporters in Satara of western Maharashtra, Pawar elaborated on his merger with the Congress remark, saying that several parties have an ideology that is similar to that of the grand old party. Asked about his assessment of the Lok Sabha elections after the completion of three phases, the former Union minister said, "It seems that voting in all these three phases is unsettling for Modi and the reason (for saying this) is that after these phases, PM Modi has changed his tone." "He has started making a mention of Muslim community openly (in his speeches). It seems he thinks that the situation would change by bringing in communal thoughts. It is my observation that some people in his party think that as the phases complete, his position is getting in danger," he said. Asked about his party's possible merger with the Congress, Pawar said he never made any such remark. Sharad Pawar, in an interview to a newspaper said recently that in the next couple of years, several regional parties will associate more closely with the Congress or even merge with it. Elaborating on it, he said, "Take the example of our party - NCP. From foundation till today, NCP and Congress have been working together. The ideology of both the parties is rooted in (the ideals of Mahatma) Gandhi and (Jawaharlal) Nehru. So, it will be no surprise to see an increase in sentiments among parties that share (an ideology similar to that of the Congress), coming together and working more closely with each other." ED opposes interim bail to Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Thursday opposed in the Supreme Court the grant of interim bail to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in a money-laundering case linked to the alleged excise policy scam, saying the right to campaign in elections is neither fundamental nor constitutional. In a fresh affidavit filed in the top court, the ED said no political leader has ever been granted interim bail for campaigning even if he is not contesting polls. "It is relevant to note that the right to campaign for an election is neither a fundamental right nor a constitutional right and not even a legal right," the agency said. It added that to its knowledge, "no political leader has been granted interim bail for campaigning even though he is not the contesting candidate. Even a contesting candidate is not granted interim bail if he is in custody for his own campaigning". On Wednesday, Justice Sanjiv Khanna, who headed the bench that heard Kejriwal's petition against his arrest in the case, said, "We will pronounce the interim order (on bail) on Friday. The main matter related to the challenge to arrest will also be taken up on the same day." The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader was arrested on March 21 and is currently lodged in Tihar Jail under judicial custody. On May 7, the bench, also comprising Justice Dipankar Datta, had reserved its verdict on Kejriwal's interim bail plea. On Tuesday, a Delhi court extended Kejriwal's judicial custody in the case till May 20. The Delhi High Court had, on April 9, upheld the AAP leader's arrest, saying there was no illegality and the ED was left with "little option" after he skipped repeated summonses and refused to join the investigation. The matter relates to alleged corruption and money laundering in the formulation and execution of the Delhi government's now-scrapped excise policy for 2021-22. BJP leader Yogi Adityanath targets congress, demands apology over Pitroda row

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Thursday demanded that Congress should apologise to the country, reported news agency ANI.  His move comes after Congress' Sam Pitroda stirred controversy by making statements on India's diversity on Wednesday.  Speaking with ANI, Yogi said, "He (Sam Pitroda) is Congress' 'buddhidata' and he is displaying the party's policy of divide and rule. Congress is responsible for the partition in 1947, it is responsible for the horrors of partition. Even after the independence, it has committed the sin of dividing the country in the name of caste, region, and language. Sam Pitroda's remark is highly condemnable. Congress party should apologise to the country for the things it is making Sam Pitroda say." Describing Congress' mindset as dangerous, the Uttar Pradesh CM further added, "The way Congress is trying to divide the four parts (North, South, East and West) of the country based on skin colour shows the dangerous mindset of Congress. The statement is highly shameful and condemnable. The statement by Sam Pitroda also insults the 140 crore Indians and Congress should apologise for this." Pitroda, in an interview to 'The Statesman', while reflecting upon the democracy in India said, "We have survived 75 years in a very happy environment where people could live together, leaving aside a few fights here and there. We could hold a country together as diverse as India, where people in the East look like Chinese, people in the West look like Arab, people in the North look like white, and maybe people in the South look like Africans." On Wednesday late evening, Sam Pitroda resigned as the Indian Overseas Congress chief after his racist statement gathered controversy from both allies and opposition.

PM Modi to hold roadshow in Patna on May 12

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will hold a roadshow in Patna on May 12 for the BJP candidates from Patliputra and Patna Sahib Lok Sabha seats. Sharing details of the programme, Bihar BJP President and Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary on Wednesday said that sitting BJP MPs Ravi Shankar Prasad and Ram Kripal Yadav, who are also the party candidates from Patna Sahib and Patliputra seats respectively, will remain present during the roadshow. The roadshow, according to Choudhary, will be the first such programme by a Prime Minister. It is slated for May 12 evening at the Dak Bungalow Chowk area. Apart from locals, people from the entire state will gather in Patna to witness the roadshow, the Deputy CM said. The state BJP has already started preparations for the roadshow and workers have been invited from across the state. "This roadshow will give a big message to the entire state... in the last 10 years, the Prime Minister has worked to save the Constitution and the development of the country. Works have been done to further strengthen the reservation system. All these things will be highlighted in the roadshow," Ravi Shankar Prasad said. "No Prime Minister has done a roadshow in the city so far. We are busy preparing for the Prime Minister's roadshow," he added. "Prime Minister Narendra Modi's roadshow will be historic. Lakhs of people from Patliputra will participate in the roadshow," Ram Kripal Yadav said. The BJP has set a target to win all 40 Lok Sabha seats in Bihar while the Opposition is claiming that everyone will be surprised when the results are announced. Interacting to media persons at Patna airport on Wednesday, RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav said: "If Prime Minister Modi will do a roadshow, Tejashwi will do a job show... For how long will he take the help of lies?" "Not a single BJP leader is talking about the issues related to common people. The rich are becoming richer and the poor are becoming poorer... Have you ever heard from them (BJP leaders) about issues related to education or health?... Only useless things are heard from the BJP," Yadav said. Basics of investing: Five tips for beginners

By Jasmeen Ara Shaikh With more Gen Z individuals entering the job market and millennials showing an interest in diversifying their income sources, investing is indeed the new cool. The generational habits of piling up savings in lockers or creating fixed deposits have now taken a back seat as a new income class emerges—one that's also risk-taking and tech-savvy. However, starting your investment journey can be overwhelming and may seem complicated. Speaking to Midday, SEBI registered financial advisor Kalpesh Ashar sheds light on the basics of investing through these five tips:" 1. Budgeting: Before you invest your income, understand how you are spending it. It’s important to draw a demarcation between your wants and needs; cutting down on frivolous expenses and avoiding the habit of borrowing through loans or tapping into bank FDs. Ashar suggests defining a goal tenure and purpose for your investments, which will guide your choice of financial instruments and keep you motivated to invest. 2. Cut procrastination: Procrastination is the biggest enemy of investment. The earlier you start investing, the more years of returns you can accumulate—that's a simple mantra. You can start with as little as Rs 500 monthly. It's all about getting into the habit of investing and gradually building a corpus over time. 'There is no right time; the right time is now,' he says. 3. Risk management: Despite the stigma attached to insurance, Ashar suggests getting life insurance as early as your 20s and building an insurance portfolio. A life insurance is only for the one who is the financial contributor of the family and acts as financial insurance in circumstances where your income sources may be struck down by some factor or the other. Unlike health insurance, it’s not an emotional asset and not a necessity for every family member. An adequate term plan is the suggested way to proceed.  4. Start easy: Once you have established your goal tenure and purpose, it's crucial to start investing your capital without further delays. For someone in their 20s just starting their career, Ashar suggests considering mutual funds. Mutual funds offer the opportunity to invest in stocks, bonds, and even gold, thereby helping to maintain a diverse portfolio. They also enable you to participate in the capital market without direct involvement, as experts manage your portfolio, thus minimising risks associated with lack of knowledge and reducing mental pressure to some extent. Direct investment in equity demands dedicated time, knowledge, and tolerance for potential losses. The option to start with as little as Rs. 500 per month and gradually increase contributions as your career progresses makes mutual funds an even more appealing option for young investors. It's essential to invest through regulated channels only. 5. Risk Appetite: With investing comes risk. Although there's no definitive answer to what a beginner's risk appetite should be, Kalpesh says, 'The younger you are, the more risk appetite you have because you have more career years ahead of you and more time to earn and invest.' However, he emphasizes the need to take calculated risks and plan mindfully, especially for Gen Z individuals who are often attracted to quick, high-return investments that could lead to trouble. Investing certainly cannot be learned and mastered in a day. As Kalpesh puts it, 'Saving is an emotion and investing is an art.' Discipline, diversity, and patience are key to a successful investing journey.

Air India Express cancels 74 flights due to cabin crew shortage

Faced with cabin crew shortage, Air India Express on Thursday cancelled 74 flights and said Air India will operate services on 20 of its routes to minimise disruptions. A section of cabin crew has reported sick to protest against alleged mismanagement at the airline, which has resulted in the cancellation of more than 90 flights since Tuesday night. "We will be operating 292 flights today. We have mobilised all resources and Air India will support us by operating on 20 of our routes. However, 74 of our flights stand cancelled and we urge our guests booked to fly with us to check if their flight is affected by the disruption before heading to the airport," the airline said in a statement. In case their flight is cancelled or delayed beyond three hours, the carrier said the passengers may opt for a full refund or reschedule to a later date without any fees. The number of cancelled flights at 74 translates to around 20 per cent of the airline's scheduled daily flights. Earlier in the day, sources said the airline has issued termination notices to 25 cabin crew members who had reported sick and asked others to join back for duty by 4 pm on Thursday. Against this backdrop, Air India Express said it is taking appropriate steps against certain individuals. "While we will continue to engage with our cabin crew colleagues with a commitment to address any concern, we are taking appropriate steps against certain individuals as their actions have caused grave inconvenience to thousands of our guests," it added.

TMC lodges complaint against Adhikari and others over Sandeshkhali 'sting video'

The Trinamool Congress (TMC) filed a complaint on Thursday with the Election Commission against West Bengal's Leader of Opposition, Suvendu Adhikari, and others regarding the Sandeshkhali issue. According to ANI report, the move was executed after leaders accidentally confessed on camera that the rape accusations in Sandeshkhali were fabricated. The TMC had previously orchestrated a protest march in Trimohini, Sandeshkhali, alleging a BJP conspiracy against women in the region. The accusation stemmed from a sting operation that allegedly revealed BJP involvement in orchestrating the incident. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee sternly warned the BJP against disrespecting the mothers of Bengal on Sunday, stressing that once a woman's lost self-respect is irreversible. The controversy escalated with the unfolding of a sting operation video concerning a BJP Mandal president named Gangadhar Koyal. In the video, Koyal alleges that Sandeshkhali women, who were not assaulted, were portrayed as rape victims at the direction of the Leader of Opposition, Suvendu Adhikari. Koyal claimed that Adhikari assured him protection from TMC's strongmen in exchange for his cooperation in fabricating a rape case. However, the news channel broadcasting the sting operation did not verify the authenticity of the clip. Meanwhile, Shahjahan, a central figure in the Sandeshkhali case, is in custody for purportedly attacking an Enforcement Directorate (ED) team during a raid related to an alleged ration scam at his residence. The women of Sandeshkhali, situated in the North 24 Parganas district, had previously protested against both the ruling TMC and Shahjahan. They accused him and his associates of committing severe atrocities, including land-grabbing and sexual assault. Multiple women came forward alleging coercion by Shahjahan and his aides. The Sandeshkhali issue, which started as crucial evidence of abuse by the TMC on women during elections, has now distorted its narrative with the emergence of the sting operation video. With the complaint lodged, investigations are eagerly awaited by the citizens. While the video's credibility is up for questioning, it just deepens the complications of the Sandeshkhali issue, which will severely determine the course of this election. (With inputs from ANI)
