Police detain father of juvenile involved in Pune car accident

Police have detained the father of a 17-year-old boy allegedly involved in a Pune car accident that killed two persons in Pune and arrested three executives of two hotels for serving liquor to the juvenile, officials said on Tuesday, reported news agency PTI. The Porsche car allegedly driven by the 17-year-old, who the police claim was drunk at the time, knocked down two motorbike riders in Kalyani Nagar area in Maharashtra's Pune city in the early hours of Sunday, causing their death, as per officials, reported PTI. "We have detained the teenager's father from Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and he is being brought to Pune and will be arrested in the case registered against him," Commissioner of Police Amitesh Kumar said, reported PTI. Besides, the Pune police have arrested Cosie restaurant owner Pralhad Bhutda and manager Sachin Katkar and Hotel Blak manager Sandip Sangle for allegedly serving alcohol to the juvenile, Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime) Shailesh Balkawade said, reported PTI. "All will be produced in a court later in the day," he said, reported PTI. On the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday, the accused juvenile along with his friends went to the two establishments between 9.30 pm and 1 am and allegedly consumed liquor, according to police. "The CCTV footage of the bar clearly shows that the juvenile was consuming alcohol. There is no doubt that the juvenile was driving the car after consuming alcohol. We will be submitting all these facts to the court," police commissioner Kumar earlier said, reported PTI. The police had registered a case against the teenager's father, a real estate developer, under sections 75 and 77 of the Juvenile Justice Act, and against the owners and staff members of the bar establishments for serving alcohol to an underage person, reported PTI. The probe in these cases has been transferred to the crime branch, an official earlier said. Section 75 deals with "willful neglect of a child, or exposing a child to mental or physical illnesses," while section 77 deals with supplying a child with intoxicating liquor or drugs, reported PTI. According to the FIR lodged in connection with the incident, the man, despite knowing his son did not have a valid driving license, gave him the car, thus endangering the latter's life, and allowed him to party even as the father knew that he consumes liquor. A group of friends were returning on motorbikes at around 3.15 am on Sunday after a party when the speeding Porsche hit one of the motorcycles at Kalyani Nagar junction. The two riders -- Anis Awadhiya and Ashwini Costa, both 24-year-old IT professionals and hailing from Madhya Pradesh -- died of their injuries, police said, reported PTI. The accused teenager was subsequently produced before the Juvenile Justice Board which granted him bail hours later. It also directed him to visit the Regional Transport Office and study traffic rules, and submit a presentation to the Board within 15 days. "The CCL (Child in Conflict with Law) will write an essay of 300 words on the topic of road accidents and their solutions," the order read. According to police, a case has been registered against the youngster under section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder ) of the Indian Penal Code and provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act. The police on Monday said they will move a higher court for permission to try the teenager involved in the Pune car accident as an adult. (With inputs from PTI)

Delhi Police forms SIT to look into Swati Maliwal assault case

A week after Rajya Sabha MP for the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) accused Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's former personal secretary Bibhav Kumar of beating her, police announced the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to look into the Swati Maliwal assault case. Per an ANI report, Anjitha Chepyala, the Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) for North Delhi, is in charge of the SIT and has been leading the inquiry. The SIT also consists of three Inspector-rank officers, one of them being the officer from the Civil Lines Police Station, where the matter was initially reported. The SIT will be submitting its report to senior officials after conducting its investigation, police said. The Delhi Police took Bibhav Kumar to the drawing room of Kejriwal's residence on Monday where Kumar had allegedly assaulted Maliwal, to find out details about the sequence of events that took place on the morning of May 13. The police noted down the answers to all their questions sequence-wise, mapped them and took photographs of the crime scene where the hour-long crime took place, officials told ANI. According to Delhi Police sources, the accused and the victim's accounts of what happened are currently being examined because the crime scene has been recreated by bringing them both to the location. Officials from Delhi Police said that they also paid a visit to Bibhav Kumar's residence. The police are on their way to retrieve Bibhav Kumar's mobile data expecting that it would give them a fresh lead, they said. They are also trying to find out whether the CCTV footage has been tampered with, as accused by Swati Maliwal. The police seized the DVR of Kejriwal's CCTV footage on Sunday evening and are trying to retrieve the blank portion of the footage. Concerning the alleged attack on Maliwal, Kejriwal's former PA was taken into custody earlier on Saturday. After his appearance before the Tis Hazari Court, he was placed under five days of police arrest. In her complaint, Maliwal claimed that Bibhav "kicked" her in her "chest, stomach, and pelvis area" and "slapped" her "at least seven to eight times" as she "kicked and screamed" and "brutally dragged" her. Bibhav lodged a counter-complaint with the police on Friday, accusing Maliwal of gaining 'unauthorised entry' into the CM's Civil Lines residence and 'verbally abusing' him. (With Inputs from ANI)

Will take them to court for every lie they spread: Swati Maliwal attacks AAP

Rajya Sabha MP for the AAP, Swati Maliwal, has accused the Delhi Chief Minister's assistant Bibhav Kumar of assault. She has also threatened to initiate a lawsuit against Delhi ministries and AAP leaders for "spreading lies" about a "corruption FIR" that was filed against her. Per an ANI report, Swati Maliwal took to social media platform X claiming that her status in the party changed from "Lady Singham" to "BJP agent" right after she filed a complaint against now-arrested Kumar. "According to them, I was 'Lady Singham' until I filed a complaint against Bibhav Kumar and today I have become a BJP agent? "I will take you to court for every lie you spread!" Maliwal said in a post on Monday. She further added, "Since yesterday, Delhi ministers are spreading lies that an FIR has been filed against me for corruption and that I did all this on the instructions of BJP. This FIR was lodged 8 years ago in 2016 after which both the CM and LG appointed me as the Chairperson of the Women's Commission twice more. The case is completely fake on which the Hon'ble High Court has stayed for 1.5 years, who have accepted that no money transaction has taken place." कल से दिल्ली के मंत्री झूठ फैला रहे है कि मुझपे भ्रष्टाचार की FIR हुई है इसलिए BJP के इशारे पर मैंने ये सब किया। ये FIR 8 साल पहले 2016 में हो चुकी थी जिसके बाद मुझे सीएम और LG दोनों ने दो बार और महिला आयोग की अध्यक्ष नियुक्त किया। केस पूरी तरह फर्जी है जिस पर 1.5 साल से माननीय… — Swati Maliwal (@SwatiJaiHind) May 20, 2024 She then said, "They're putting my relatives' lives in danger by tweeting their details using their car numbers. Well, lies don't last long. But in the intoxication of power and in the passion to bring someone down, lest it happens that when the truth comes out, you are not able to look even your family in the eye. I will take you to court for every lie you spread!". The case in question concerns the allegation that Bibhav Kumar, Kejriwal's former personal assistant, assaulted Swati Maliwal at the Chief Minister's residence. Sources claim that earlier on Monday, Delhi Police brought Bibhav Kumar to the chief minister's house and staged the crime scene there. Kejriwal's former PA was then arrested on Saturday in this case. After being presented to the Tis Hazari Court, he was placed under five days of police custody. Maliwal, in her complaint, alleged that Bibhav "slapped" her "at least seven to eight times" while she "continued screaming" and "brutally dragged" her while "kicking" her in her "chest, stomach and pelvis area." On Friday, Bibhav filed a counter-complaint with the police, alleging that Maliwal had entered the chief minister's Civil Lines home "unauthorisedly" and had verbally abused him. Meanwhile, on May 25, elections will be held in all seven of Delhi's seats. On June 4, the votes will be tallied. The last two elections have seen the BJP win each of Delhi's seven seats. This time around, the AAP and Congress have agreed to share seats, with the former running for four seats and the latter for three. (With Inputs from ANI)

ICMR slams Covaxin study for poor methodology

The Indian Council of Medical Research Director General Dr Rajiv Bahl on Monday criticised a recently published study on the long-term safety analysis of the Covaxin in adults and adolescents for its poor methodology and design, and clarified the article misleadingly and erroneously “acknowledges” ICMR. Dr Bahl said the study had no control arm of unvaccinated individuals for comparing the rates of events between the vaccinated and unvaccinated groups. Hence, the reported events in the study cannot be linked or attributed to COVID-19 vaccination. The ICMR is not associated with the study and has not provided any financial or technical support for the research, Dr Bahl said.
